Chapter 5

The medium wide shot held its frame as the atmosphere in the dining hall underwent a catastrophic shift.

Corbin Wexler, standing just feet away, had watched the entire interaction. The Mafia boss possessed a preternatural ability to read the micro-expressions of those around him. He noticed the tear stains on his son's cheeks, the rumpled clothing, and the absolute, white-knuckled desperation with which Noel clung to the housemaid.

Corbin did not move his powerful shoulders. He simply stared at the scene unfolding before him, his heavily tattooed hands resting completely still by his sides. The generous spacing of the ink was clearly visible under the warm, golden chandelier light.

He slowly turned his head. The loose strands of thick, slightly wavy hair falling over his forehead cast no shadows in the bright, luminous room. He shifted his cold, terrifyingly perceptive gaze away from his son and looked directly into Lena’s eyes.

Lena looked up, meeting his intense, unyielding stare.

Corbin’s voice stayed deep and quiet, carrying a lethal, acoustic weight that vibrated through the polished floors.

“Lena. Why ‘Mommy’?”

The question dropped into the room like a heavy stone. There was a deliberate, terrifying pause placed perfectly after her name.

Every single guest at the massive, crowded table stopped eating and speaking. The melodic hum of polite, American-accented conversations died completely. Men in expensive formal wear and women in satin gowns turned their heads in unison, their fair, rosy faces locking onto the head of the table. The silence was absolute, heavy with the terrifying realization that the apex predator of their world had just halted his own engagement dinner.

Before Lena could part her trembling lips to answer the boss, Evelina Shaw moved to intercept the narrative.

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Evelina.

The bright, clear lighting illuminated every detail of her sculpted beauty—the flawless, rosy skin, the sharp contour of her cheekbones, and the brilliant flash of her diamond earrings.

Evelina met Corbin’s cold gaze with a faint, dismissive smile. She projected an aura of complete, unbothered calm, refusing to let the panic bleed into her posture.

She gave a small, indulgent breath, a sound designed to mimic affectionate exasperation, as if dealing with a mildly annoying pet.

“She’s been coaching him, darling.”

Evelina delivered the words with a smooth, casually certain tone. Her eyes carefully and frantically searched Corbin's angular expression for any sign of agreement, any indication that he had bought her casual deflection. She waited for him to nod, to dismiss the manipulative maid and return the focus to their celebration.
