Chapter 5

The question hung in the vast, brightly lit living room, a heavy, suffocating weight that no one dared to answer. Corbin’s voice hadn't echoed; it had been a raw, jagged whisper, but it carried the devastating finality of a judge passing an execution sentence.

Tabitha backed away, her stiletto heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floor as she sought refuge behind her father. The undeniable video evidence had completely stripped away her ability to manipulate the narrative. She wasn't toughening up a weak child; she was actively attempting to murder her own niece for sport.

"It... it looks worse than it was," Tabitha stammered, her voice pitching high with absolute panic. She pointed a trembling finger at Willa. "That video is out of context! She selectively recorded it to make me look bad! Corbin, you know me! I wouldn't—"

"Shut your mouth," Corbin interrupted softly.

The lethal calm in his voice was infinitely more terrifying than his earlier shouting. He slowly handed the smartphone back to Willa without looking at her.

"Thank you, Willa," Corbin murmured, his deep voice barely audible. "You saved her life today."

"I... I couldn't just watch," Willa replied, her breath hitching as she quickly slipped the phone back into her pocket, acutely aware of the murderous glares she was now receiving from the rest of the Voss family.

Corbin turned his full, undivided attention back to his sister. He took a slow, deliberate step forward. The polished leather of his shoes made no sound, but the entire room seemed to physically tilt with his movement.

"Corbin, stop," Orson commanded, stepping squarely into his son's path. The patriarch raised both hands in a placating gesture, completely desperate to maintain control over his fracturing family. "We will handle this internally. Tabitha clearly overstepped, and she will be disciplined. But we do not air our dirty laundry in front of guests. Let the girl go to her room, and we will discuss this in my office."

"Discuss it?" Corbin asked, a dark, humorless smile curling the corners of his lips. He looked down at his father, utterly disgusted by the man's cowardly attempt to protect an abuser. "There is nothing left to discuss, Orson. She poisoned my daughter's air. She watched her suffocate and smiled."

"She is your sister!" Orson roared, finally losing his temper. "You will not tear this family apart over a child's medical condition!"

"She is not my sister," Corbin stated with absolute, terrifying certainty. "And you are not my family."

He reached down and effortlessly scooped Juniper into his strong arms. The little girl immediately buried her face into his shoulder, seeking the absolute safety of his embrace.

"We are leaving," Corbin announced, his voice ringing clearly across the silent room.

"If you walk out that door, Corbin, you leave everything behind," Orson threatened, his face purple with rage. "The accounts. The properties. Your position in the syndicate. I will strip you of everything."

"Keep it," Corbin replied smoothly, not breaking his stride as he walked past his father. "Your money is soaked in poison. I don't want a single dime of it."

He didn't look at Tabitha again. He didn't offer a final, dramatic threat. He simply carried his daughter out of the toxic environment, pushing through the heavy, ornate front doors of the estate and stepping out into the bright, clear afternoon air.

He had chosen his daughter over the empire. But as he walked toward his armored SUV, he knew with absolute certainty that the Voss family would never let him simply walk away in peace. The war had just begun.
