Chapter 1

The sprawling living room of the Voss family estate was bathed in bright, cinematic sunlight that streamed through massive floor-to-ceiling windows. There was no yellow tint to the light, only a crisp, unforgiving clarity that highlighted the opulent surroundings and the fair, rosy complexions of the affluent family gathered within. It was supposed to be a celebratory afternoon, a reunion of wealth and lineage, but beneath the surface of clinking glasses and polite laughter, a toxic undercurrent flowed freely.

Corbin Voss stood near the French doors, a towering figure of deeply masculine authority. At thirty-five, he possessed the rugged, flawless handsomeness of a movie star. He wore a fitted dark shirt that stretched taut across his broad chest, tailored trousers, and polished leather shoes. A heavy, expensive wristwatch glinted as he crossed his arms, his sharp eyes constantly scanning the crowded room. Despite the affluence surrounding him, his focus remained entirely on the small figure weaving through the forest of adult legs.

Four-year-old Juniper Voss was undeniably adorable. Her fair, rosy cheeks were usually flushed with innocent energy, but today she seemed tired. She wore a pretty, casual sundress and bright sneakers, her blonde curls bouncing as she moved. Strapped securely across her chest was a small, colorful pouch that held her emergency asthma inhaler. She was Corbin’s entire world, the only pure thing in the sprawling, corrupted Voss dynasty.

At the center of the room, holding court near the marble fireplace, was Tabitha Voss. At forty-two, Corbin’s older sister was a woman whose elegance was a carefully constructed weapon. She wore a pristine silk blouse, tailored trousers, and sharp stiletto heels. Heavy diamond earrings and a thick gold bracelet caught the sunlight as she gestured dismissively toward the catering staff.

Suddenly, a sharp, ragged wheeze cut through the ambient noise of the party.

Corbin’s head snapped toward the sound. He saw Juniper stumbling near the edge of the large Persian rug, her small hands clawing desperately at her own throat. The little girl was struggling to breathe, her face paling rapidly as a severe asthma attack seized her tiny lungs.

"Juniper!" Corbin shouted, his voice instantly drowning out the polite chatter.

Juniper frantically reached for the small pouch strapped to her chest, her trembling fingers fumbling with the zipper to retrieve her inhaler. But before she could pull it out, a shadow fell over her.

Tabitha stepped smoothly into her path. With a motion so swift and cruel it defied belief, the older woman reached down and snatched the inhaler directly from the little girl’s trembling hands.

"Ah!" Juniper gasped, reaching up desperately, but Tabitha effortlessly raised the device high above her head, completely out of the child's reach.

"Oh, stop being so dramatic, Juniper," Tabitha mocked, a cruel, vicious smile twisting her elegant features. She looked down at the suffocating child with absolute disdain. "You're ruining the party with your pathetic little noises."

Corbin saw the entire exchange. The sight of his daughter gasping for air while his own sister mocked her ignited a fire in his blood that threatened to burn the entire estate to the ground.

"Give my daughter her inhaler!" Corbin thundered. His face was entirely contorted with a terrifying, protective fury, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings like a physical shockwave.
