Chapter 7

The ringing silence in the backyard was profound, broken only by the wet, rattling groans of Donovan bleeding amidst the ruined barbecue station. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the scattered paper plates and the colorful explosion of condiments, creating a surreal, high-definition portrait of total devastation.
Valerie stood perfectly still in the center of the patio. Her breathing was slow and entirely controlled. She flexed her right hand, adjusting the heavy signet ring on her finger. She did not look at the broken man on the ground; her cold, intimidating eyes swept across the crowd, challenging anyone else to step forward.
Harper, the arrogant twelve-year-old girl, was pressing herself against the trunk of a tree, her porcelain skin deathly pale, trembling with unadulterated terror as she looked at her unconscious father.
"Valerie! What have you done?!" a booming, furious voice shattered the silence.
William Thorne, the sixty-seven-year-old patriarch of the family, charged through the crowd of paralyzed guests. His fair, weathered face was contorted with absolute, blinding rage. The deep wrinkles around his eyes and mouth were stark against his flushed skin. He had spent his entire life ruling his family with an iron fist, and the sight of his favored, eldest son lying in a pool of blood and ketchup was a direct assault on his authority.
"He attacked me, William," Valerie stated coldly, not backing down an inch as her father approached. "He struck me first. He got exactly what he deserved."
"He is your brother! He is the heir to this family!" William roared, his American accent slurring slightly with fury. "You are an animal! I should have never brought you and your mother into this house! You have ruined this family's reputation today!"
"This family's reputation," Valerie hissed, her voice dropping into a lethal register, "is built on the money I generate. You are a figurehead, old man. Nothing more."
The ultimate disrespect pushed William over the edge. Blinded by decades of toxic patriarchy and a complete inability to accept a woman's authority, William bypassed all logic.
He lunged forward with surprising speed for a man of his age. Instead of striking her directly, William aggressively grabbed Valerie from behind. His large, weathered hands clamped down harshly on her shoulders, his fingers digging into her collarbones.
With a violent, brutal heave, William forcefully shoved Valerie forward, intending to throw her to the ground to establish his physical dominance.
Valerie stumbled, her heels scraping loudly against the stone patio as she was propelled forcefully toward the heavy wooden picnic table. She threw her hands out, catching the edge of the thick wood just in time to stop her face from smashing into the table. The impact rattled her teeth, but she did not fall.
"You will kneel and apologize to your brother right now!" William screamed, stepping up close behind her, fully intending to grab her hair and force her to the ground.
Valerie gripped the edge of the picnic table, her knuckles turning white. The final illusion of familial loyalty shattered into a million pieces. Her father did not care about her. He did not care about her son. They were simply collateral damage in his pursuit of legacy.
Valerie took a sharp breath, her eyes darkening into pure, unyielding black voids.

"Never again," Valerie whispered to herself.
Operating with devastating, ingrained combat reflexes, Valerie planted her feet and violently spun free from his impending grasp, preparing to dismantle the architect of her lifelong misery.
