Chapter 2

The bright video colors of the backyard seemed to sharpen as the focal point of the afternoon arrived. It was finally time for the cake. The guests began to gather around the central picnic table, their cheerful American accents blending into a warm, melodic chorus of the traditional birthday song. The natural, cinematic lighting caught the flickering flames of the eight small candles arranged on the rich chocolate frosting.

Julian was lifted into a tall chair at the head of the table. His warm, cocoa-brown face was glowing with absolute, unadulterated joy. He looked around at the smiling faces of the guests, his tiny hands gripping the edge of the white tablecloth.

"Make a wish, Julian!" one of the younger guests called out enthusiastically. "Make it a really, really big one!"

"Close your eyes tight, buddy," another voice added. "Don't let anyone see what you're wishing for, or it won't come true!"

Julian squeezed his eyes shut, his long eyelashes resting against his cheeks. He took a deep, theatrical breath, his small chest expanding beneath his white superhero shirt.

Just a few feet away, standing outside the circle of singing guests, was Harper Thorne. At twelve years old, Donovan’s daughter possessed fair, porcelain skin with light freckles across her nose. Dressed in an outrageously expensive designer summer dress and strappy sandals, Harper carried herself with a deeply ingrained, arrogant cruelty that perfectly mirrored her father's. A mocking smirk twisted her lips as she watched her little cousin prepare to blow out the candles.

Behind her back, Harper held a heavy, bright orange plastic beach bucket. It wasn't filled with sand or toys. It was brimming to the rim with thick, foul-smelling, muddy water she had scooped from a stagnant drainage ditch near the edge of the property.

"Watch this," Harper whispered to her father, Donovan, who stood nearby with his arms crossed.

"Make it count, princess," Donovan chuckled darkly, his pale, sunburnt face stretching into a malicious grin. "Put the little prince in his place."

As Julian leaned forward, his lips pursed to blow out the flickering candles, Harper moved with sudden, vicious speed. She shoved past a startled guest and stepped directly up to the side of the table.

Without a single word of warning, Harper hoisted the heavy orange bucket and violently dumped the entire contents directly over Julian and his beautiful chocolate cake.

The impact was catastrophic. A thick, dark wave of foul mud exploded across Julian’s face, instantly soaking his crisp white superhero shirt. The filthy water crashed down onto the cake, completely destroying the rich chocolate frosting and instantly snuffing out the eight burning candles. The muddy sludge splattered violently across the pristine white tablecloth, ruining the centerpiece of the entire celebration in a fraction of a second.

The guests gasped in collective, paralyzed horror. The joyful singing died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence.

Julian sat frozen in his chair, the filthy water dripping from his chin and eyelashes. He slowly opened his eyes, the absolute shock registering on his smooth, cocoa-brown skin. His lower lip began to tremble violently, and a second later, a heartbreaking, devastated wail erupted from his small chest. Julian began crying uncontrollably, his tiny hands wiping uselessly at the mud covering his face.

The silence of the guests was shattered by loud, booming laughter. Donovan and William stood near the patio, throwing their heads back in cruel, uninhibited amusement at the sight of the weeping child.

"Oops," Harper announced, her voice ringing out loudly over Julian's sobs. She tossed the empty orange bucket onto the grass and offered a vicious, mocking smirk to the stunned crowd. "I accidentally snuffed out your wish."
