Chapter 1

The afternoon sun bathed the sprawling estate backyard in bright, cinematic light, completely devoid of any dull yellow tint. It was a flawless summer day, the kind of pristine afternoon where the sky stretched out in a perfect, uninterrupted canopy of vivid blue. The crisp, clean lighting illuminated the lush green lawns and the elaborate party setup. Beneath the shade of the grand oak trees, picnic tables were draped in spotless white linens. A massive chocolate birthday cake sat proudly at the center of the main table, its rich, dark frosting gleaming in the natural daylight. Nearby, a folding barbecue-preparation station held an array of perfectly aligned condiment bottles, paper plates, and woven bread baskets. Further across the grass, a freestanding rack displayed an assortment of pristine lawn-game equipment, ready for the guests to enjoy.
Valerie Thorne stood near the edge of the patio, observing the lively gathering of relatives and guests with a guarded expression. At twenty-seven years old, she was breathtakingly beautiful, possessing flawless, deep ebony skin that radiated a quiet, unyielding authority. She wore an elegant, lightweight summer blouse paired perfectly with tailored trousers. A heavy family signet ring rested on her right hand, catching the bright sunlight alongside a luxury wristwatch and delicate earrings. Despite her graceful appearance in her stylish heels, there was an intimidating aura about her—a suppressed, deeply masculine energy akin to a veteran Mafia boss. And that was exactly what she was. Valerie secretly controlled the entire Thorne organization and its vast family accounts, operating in the shadows while letting her arrogant, estranged relatives believe they still held the reins of power.
"The catering looks absolutely phenomenal today, Valerie," an older female guest remarked, stepping up beside her with a crystal glass of sparkling water. "You always throw the most wonderful parties for little Julian. He must be so incredibly thrilled."
"Thank you, Margaret," Valerie replied, her American accent smooth, measured, and perfectly polite. "Julian has been looking forward to this all month. Turning three is a very big milestone for him. I just want everything to be perfect."
"Well, he certainly looks like a little superhero today," Margaret laughed warmly, gesturing toward the center of the yard.
Valerie’s sharp, dark eyes softened as they landed on her son. Julian possessed warm, smooth cocoa-brown skin and a smile that could melt the coldest of hearts. He was currently running across the grass in a crisp white superhero birthday shirt, tailored summer shorts, and tiny white sneakers, laughing as he chased a rogue balloon.
"He is the absolute center of my universe," Valerie murmured, her voice laced with an intense, fierce devotion. "There is nothing in this world I wouldn't do to ensure his happiness. Nothing."
"It's a shame your brother and father don't share your enthusiasm," Margaret whispered, leaning in closer. "They have been glaring at the poor boy since they arrived."

Valerie’s expression instantly cooled. She glanced toward the patio, where her forty-one-year-old half-brother, Donovan, stood holding a drink. Donovan possessed pale, fair skin with a slight reddish, sunburnt undertone. He wore an expensive summer polo, tailored shorts, a flashy luxury wristwatch, and loafers. Beside him stood their father, William Thorne, a sixty-seven-year-old man with fair, weathered skin marked by visible wrinkles and age spots. They were exchanging low, mocking words, completely isolated from the joy of the party.
"They are here out of obligation, Margaret," Valerie said, her tone suddenly clipped and dangerous. "They tolerate us. But they will soon learn that tolerance is no longer an acceptable currency in this family."
