Chapter 5

The ringing silence in the backyard was absolute, broken only by the soft, terrified whimpers of Julian clinging to his mother’s leg. The bright, vivid colors of the summer day felt like a grotesque, mocking backdrop to the violence that had just erupted. Valerie slowly straightened her posture. She raised a hand, her family signet ring catching the cinematic light, and gently touched her stinging cheek.
"Mommy?" Julian whispered, his cocoa-brown face pale beneath the mud. "Are you okay?"
"I am perfectly fine, my love," Valerie answered softly, her voice completely devoid of the panic she usually feigned. She looked down at him, offering a small, reassuring smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Go stand with Auntie Sarah for just one minute. Mommy needs to have a conversation with your uncle."
She gently nudged Julian toward the trusted relative, who quickly pulled the weeping toddler behind the safety of a large oak tree.
Once her son was secure, Valerie turned her full, terrifying attention back to Donovan. The subdued, polite half-sister was dead. The apex predator of the criminal underworld was now fully awake, and her patience had entirely evaporated.
"You struck me," Valerie stated, her voice a dead, emotionless void. She took a slow, deliberate step toward him, her heels clicking ominously against the stone patio.
"You needed to be reminded of reality," Donovan retorted, crossing his arms over his chest. His pale skin looked stark against his dark polo shirt. "You’ve been acting entirely too arrogant lately, Valerie. Hovering over the family accountants, questioning the ledgers. You think because Dad lets you play secretary that you actually have power? You are nothing but a glorified accountant."
"A glorified accountant," Valerie repeated, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. She tilted her head slightly, analyzing the man before her. "You are remarkably stupid, Donovan. You have spent your entire life spending money you did not earn, assuming the wealth of this family was a divine right."
"I am the eldest son!" Donovan shouted, his temper flaring at the insult. "I am the heir to the Thorne empire! You are a mistake from a second marriage! You only have what we allow you to have!"
"Is that what you believe?" Valerie asked, her tone dropping into a register of pure, concentrated ice. The deeply intimidating, masculine energy she projected began to visibly unnerve the surrounding guests. Several relatives took a cautious step backward, sensing the apocalyptic shift in the atmosphere.
"It's a fact!" Donovan insisted, though his American accent cracked slightly under her unblinking stare. "And if you ever speak to my daughter like that again, I'll do a lot worse than slap you. I'll throw you and your bastard child out on the street."
Valerie did not flinch. She simply stared at him, her dark eyes devoid of any human empathy. The bright daylight highlighted the mud smeared across her elegant blouse, a physical manifestation of the disrespect they had shown her bloodline.
"You shouldn't have done that, Donovan," Valerie whispered. The controlled pauses in her speech highlighted her absolute, lethal resolve. "You shouldn't have touched my son. And you definitely... shouldn't have touched me."

Donovan let out a harsh, barking laugh, entirely blinded by his own toxic masculinity. "What are you going to do about it, Valerie? You going to cry to Dad?"
"No," Valerie replied, her posture shifting seamlessly into a perfectly balanced, combat-ready stance. "I am going to break you."
