Chapter 4

The tension in the brightly lit backyard escalated into a highly combustible, physical weight. The cinematic lighting offered absolutely no shadows for the guilty to hide behind. Valerie held her weeping son securely against her chest, her flawless, deep ebony skin contrasting sharply with the dark mud now smeared across her cheek and summer blouse.

"Harper, what is the meaning of this?" a brave aunt finally dared to ask, her voice shaking as she looked at the twelve-year-old girl. "Why would you do such a horrid thing to a baby?"

"He was annoying me," Harper replied glibly, inspecting her manicured fingernails with absolute indifference. "He gets everything he wants. It was just a joke. Everyone needs to calm down."

Valerie slowly stood up from the table. She kept Julian safely tucked against her side, her arm wrapped tightly around his waist. She turned her head, her cold, intimidating eyes locking directly onto Harper. The sheer, lethal menace radiating from Valerie’s gaze caused the twelve-year-old girl to involuntarily take a step backward, the mocking smirk finally faltering on her porcelain face.

"You think," Valerie said, her voice dropping into a low, vibrating hum that echoed clearly across the silent yard, "that breaking my son's heart... is a joke."

Sensing the sudden, dangerous shift in the atmosphere and realizing his daughter was retreating, Donovan immediately stepped forward. The forty-one-year-old man inserted himself aggressively between Valerie and Harper. His pale, sunburnt face was flushed with arrogant authority.

"Back off, Valerie," Donovan warned, his American accent sharp and combative. "Don't you dare look at my daughter with that tone. She was just playing around. You are completely overreacting."

"Move out of my way, Donovan," Valerie commanded. Every syllable was measured, cold, and dripping with a deeply masculine, terrifying authority that he had never heard her use before.

"Or what?" Donovan scoffed, taking a step closer, completely blinded by his lifelong belief in his own superiority. "You're going to throw a tantrum? You don't run things in this family, Valerie. You are just a placeholder until Dad officially hands the accounts over to me. So learn your place."

Without waiting for a response, Donovan aggressively reached out. He grabbed Valerie’s arm with a brutal, punishing grip, his fingers digging deeply into her fair flesh through the fabric of her ruined blouse.

"Take your hand off me," Valerie whispered, her eyes turning into black, soulless voids.

"I'll do whatever I want," Donovan sneered.

Driven by his toxic, unchecked ego and the desire to humiliate his half-sister in front of the entire family, Donovan pulled his right arm back. In a sudden, explosive burst of violence, he violently slapped Valerie directly across the face.

The sound of the impact cracked like a gunshot through the pristine summer air.

The sheer force of the blow from the grown man sent Valerie staggering sideways. She nearly lost her balance, her designer heels skidding against the stone patio. As she caught herself, holding tightly to Julian to ensure he didn't fall, the dark mud from her son’s shirt smeared completely across the front of her elegant blouse.

The entire party gasped in unison. Women covered their mouths in horror, and several men took a hesitant step forward before stopping, unsure if they should intervene in Thorne family business.

Donovan stood tall, adjusting the collar of his expensive summer polo. He looked down at Valerie, his lips twisting into a triumphant, ugly smirk.

"It was just a silly little wish from that brat," Donovan declared loudly, ensuring every guest heard him. "Get over it, and go clean yourselves up."
