Chapter 9

The profound, ringing silence of the grand dining room settled heavily over the remaining three figures. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned porcelain plates and half-empty wine glasses. The opulent space, designed for celebration, now felt entirely different—it was the quiet eye of a hurricane.
Elliot stood silently for a moment, his broad shoulders rising and falling with a slow, controlled breath. The betrayal was absolute, the upcoming syndicate war with Leona’s father inevitable, but the immediate, toxic sickness within his home had been surgically removed. Now, he had to secure his son and the woman who had suffered for his child's affection.
He turned his body, pivoting seamlessly on the polished marble floors, and focused his entire attention back on Iris and Owen.
Iris was still standing closely behind him, her hands trembling as she smoothed her rumpled white apron. Her beautiful features were pale, her eyes still puffy, and she was gently rubbing her bruised right wrist where the metal cuff had bitten into her skin.
Elliot crouched down, his tailored suit shifting, and looked his son in the eye.
"Are you unharmed, Owen?" Elliot asked, his deep voice softening significantly, losing its lethal, interrogative edge.
Owen wiped his eyes with the sleeve of his navy suit. He looked at the towering mafia boss, his eyes searching for reassurance. "I'm sorry, Daddy. I just wanted to give her a hug. I didn't mean to make Leona mad."
"Would I ever be angry with you for showing kindness to someone who cares for you?" Elliot asked, reaching out to gently cup the boy’s cheek.
Owen sniffled, leaning into his father's large, tattooed hand. "No."
"You are a very brave boy," Elliot murmured, his thumb brushing away a tear. "You protected Iris."
Elliot stood back up and shifted his gaze to Iris. The beautiful housemaid was watching him, her exhausted eyes drawn together in quiet empathy. She had endured hours of physical and psychological torture simply for returning the affection of a motherless child. The fierce, gentle loyalty she had displayed was a rare, precious commodity in Elliot's dark, violent world.
"Does your wrist require medical attention, Iris?" Elliot asked softly, stepping closer to her.
"No, Mr. Crowne," Iris answered gently, her graceful posture returning despite her disheveled state. "It is just bruised. I am perfectly fine."
"You are not fine, and you are no longer a maid in this house," Elliot stated, his voice a low, gravelly command laced with profound affection. "From this moment forward, you answer to no one but me. You will move into the secure wing tonight with Owen."
Iris’s breath hitched. The magnitude of the offer, and the safety it provided, was overwhelming. "Thank you, Elliot."
Before Elliot could respond to the sound of his first name on her lips, the heavy oak doors of the dining room burst open again. A bloodied security operative stumbled into the room, gasping for breath.

"Is the perimeter breached?" Elliot asked, spinning around, his hand already reaching for the concealed weapon beneath his vest.
"Yes, Boss!" the operative choked out. "The Cross syndicate didn't wait! They hit the outer gates! We have multiple hostiles on the grounds!"
