Chapter 4

The bright, airy lighting of the ballroom offered absolutely no place for the tension to hide. The standoff between the small boy and the powerful socialite seemed to suspend time itself.

Owen did not flinch. The six-year-old boy stood his ground on the polished marble floor. He kept his small hand extended, the silver key and the red Christmas ribbon dangling just inches from Iris’s trembling fingers. He slowly turned his head, bypassing the towering presence of his father, and looked directly at Leona.

His fair cheeks were pale, but his posture was rigid. He possessed the same dark, observant intelligence as his father. When he spoke, his voice remained small, possessing the fragile tenor of a child, but it was laced with a firm, unshakeable certainty that echoed loudly in the immediate silence.

"Iris isn't a dog," Owen stated.

The childish American accent sliced through the ambient noise of the ballroom with the devastating force of a detonating bomb.

Elliot Crowne stopped turning his signet ring. His entire body went rigid, the breath catching violently in his broad chest. His head snapped toward his son. He followed the boy's extended arm, his eyes landing on the red ribbon, and then tracing the line of sight directly to Iris.

Elliot noticed the heavy metal cuff locked tightly around the maid's delicate, bruised wrist. He saw the thick steel chain tethering her like an animal to the silver serving trolley. He took in her creased dress, her rumpled apron, her askew headband, and her deeply shadowed, tear-filled eyes.

The realization struck the mafia boss with the force of a physical blow.

Elliot slowly turned his head, meeting Iris’s eyes.

The transition was terrifying. The calm, composed host was instantly replaced by the ruthless, cold-blooded king of the syndicate. A dark, absolute void of lethal intent flooded his gaze. The very short stubble on his jawline seemed to bristle with suppressed, explosive violence.

The effect on the room was instantaneous. The sheer, commanding, and terrifying aura radiating from Elliot stripped away the festive atmosphere of the Christmas Eve dinner in a heartbeat.

Every single dinner guest at the long banquet table stopped eating. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain plates. Crystal glasses were lowered slowly back to the tables. The polite, affluent conversation died entirely in their throats, replaced by a suffocating, terrified silence. Fifty faces turned toward the head of the table, their fair skin paling as they watched the mafia boss.

"Iris," Elliot said.

His voice was deep, slow, and incredibly controlled, but the sheer gravity of his tone made the crystal chandeliers seem to rattle. He did not look at his fiancée. He did not look at his capos. He kept his cold, unwavering gaze locked entirely on the broken, exhausted housemaid.

"Who did this?" Elliot asked, the question hanging in the luminous air like an executioner's blade.
