Chapter 15

Nora’s fourth birthday returned us to the bakery.
Her request.
That surprised everyone.
She remembered the cupcake.
Not the basement.
Not Martin.
Not the politics.
Brent’s cruelty remained in fragments.
“He stole cake.”
That was her summary.
Children resize trauma differently.
Elise asked if she was sure.
Nora nodded.
“Cupcake place.”
So Celia prepared the room.
No Brent.
No locked door.
No crowded guests.
Just family.
Audrey.
Elise.
Me.
Two guards outside.
Nora reached for her cupcake.
Everyone watched too closely.
She noticed.
“Why?”
Elise laughed.
“Eat your cake.”
Nora grabbed it.
Frosting everywhere.
Then she smeared a little across my nose.
The room froze.
Nora laughed.
I stared at her.
Then at Elise.
My daughter started laughing too.
So did Audrey.
Even Celia covered her mouth.
A year earlier, frosting had been used to humiliate a child.
Now my granddaughter weaponized it against the head of Sloan for comedy.
Good.
I let it stay.
Nora pointed.
“Grandpa messy.”
“Yes.”
Celia quietly brought a napkin.
I took it.
No symbolism speech.
No grand forgiveness.
Just cake.
Afterward Nora wandered toward the office behind the counter.
Elise tensed.
Then followed.
The door was open.
Inside:
Boxes.
Flour.
Napkins.
Nothing else.
Nora looked around.
“Boring.”
“Yes,” Elise whispered.
“Very.”
May you like
They walked out.
That might have been the best thing the room could become.
