Chapter 10

Elise agreed to return to New York.

Not the estate.

A townhouse I owned but rarely used.

Her choice.

Nora stayed with her immediately.

Again, her choice.

I wanted them home.

I did not say it.

Progress.

Then Elise told me the full story.

She had discovered Brent’s operation because one woman named Leah came to her crying after being returned to her husband.

Leah said:

“The bakery man said family doesn’t let women disappear.”

Elise started asking questions.

Quietly.

Found two more women.

Then the basement.

Then Martin.

When she confronted him, Martin said something she never forgot:

“Your father runs the organization. I protect the family from problems he shouldn’t have to see.”

I closed my eyes.

That sentence explained decades.

Men around me filtered ugliness because they believed leadership functioned better if I saw only cleaned versions.

Maybe I encouraged that.

I rewarded solutions.

Disliked excuses.

Expected problems handled before reaching me.

Efficient.

Dangerous.

“What happened at Harbor House?”

Elise described two days.

Not chained.

Not beaten.

Doors guarded.

Phone removed.

Martin lecturing.

Brent coming and going.

They wanted her to agree that the women’s cases were domestic matters.

Promise silence.

She refused.

Then Martin returned her phone after she pretended to accept.

She called Clara.

Left that night.

“Why not call me?”

Elise looked at me.

“Because Martin showed me messages.”

“What messages?”

Old ones.

From captains complaining about me.

Calling me soft with my daughters.

Saying family women could manipulate me.

Martin told Elise that if she accused senior men without proof, those complaints would become the story.

She believed exposing everything immediately might weaken me.

So again—

My daughter protected me by disappearing.

I felt exhausted.

“Elise.”

She looked up.

“Never protect my chair with your life.”

Her eyes filled.

May you like

“I know that now.”

So did I.
