Chapter 4

The opulent dining hall was suffocatingly quiet. The ivory candles burning in their silver candelabras seemed to cast harsh, judgmental shadows over Rosalind’s elegant burgundy evening gown. The polished, reassuring smile that usually charmed the syndicate members had completely evaporated, leaving behind a feral mask of desperation and cornered panic.

"Do you expect me to accept the premise that my son simply invented such a specific, cruel lie, Rosalind?" Vincent asked, his deep voice slicing through her frantic excuses with effortless, measured authority.

"He’s six years old, Vincent!" Rosalind cried, her diamond earrings swinging wildly as she stood up, pointing an accusing finger at Toby. "Children have vivid imaginations! He heard the staff gossiping and twisted the words! You cannot take the word of a child and a lying maid over your future wife!"

Vincent’s dark eyes narrowed into cold, unforgiving slits. The artistic tattoos with negative space decorating his fingers stood out starkly as he rested a heavy hand on the back of Clara's velvet dining chair. He had positioned himself as an impenetrable wall between the gentle maid and the vicious fiancée.

"Is it your custom to blame a child for the treacherous filth that spills from your own mouth?" Vincent asked, his tone so terrifyingly calm that several guests physically recoiled.

"I am protecting this family!" Rosalind shrieked, slamming her manicured hands onto the carved walnut table. "Your mother was draining the accounts with her so-called treatments! She was weak! I took control of the situation to secure our future!"

The confession echoed off the gilded wall panels, sealing her fate. She hadn't denied the imprisonment; she had merely attempted to justify it as a necessary financial measure.

Vincent let out a slow, measured breath. He did not look at Rosalind anymore. He turned his attention to the dozens of elite guests, capos, and relatives seated around the massive banquet table. The warm fairy lights from the towering Christmas tree twinkled in the background, a stark contrast to the violence simmering in the mafia boss's broad shoulders.

"Do you all believe this family matter is a theatrical performance arranged for your holiday entertainment?" Vincent asked the crowd.

The unspoken threat was perfectly clear. Chairs scraped frantically against the cream marble floors. Men and women with fair, rosy skin paled in terror as they abandoned their half-eaten meals, fine wine, and festive cheer. They rushed toward the massive double doors, eager to escape the impending explosion of Hale violence before they were forced to take a side.

Within ninety seconds, the sprawling dining hall was completely empty, save for Vincent, Rosalind, Toby, Clara, and the heavy security detail standing silently by the exits.

Vincent looked down at Clara, his expression softening for a fraction of a second. The gentle maid was trembling, her delicate features pale with shock, yet she had stood her ground to deliver the truth.

"Clara, will you take Toby upstairs to his quarters and remain with him until I come for you both?" Vincent asked softly.

"Yes, sir," Clara whispered, stepping forward to take the little boy's hand and guiding him quickly away from the nightmare.
