Chapter 3

The revelation that the matriarch of the Hale syndicate was imprisoned in the basement sent a shockwave of absolute terror through the dining room. The guests, hardened criminals and high-society aristocrats alike, held their breath. No one dared to move a muscle under the crushing weight of the silence.
Rosalind Voss moved quickly, desperate to regain control of the narrative before Vincent unleashed his legendary wrath. She looked directly at Vincent, a reassuring, polished smile arriving slightly late to her fair, aristocratic face.
"Your mother’s abroad, darling," Rosalind stated, her American accent dripping with false sweetness. "You know this. We saw her off at the private airstrip ourselves. This maid is clearly having a psychological break, or she is attempting to orchestrate a very clumsy extortion attempt. I will have the guards escort her out immediately."
Vincent did not respond to Rosalind. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he gripped the edge of the carved walnut table. He rose slowly to his full, towering height, his tailored dark three-piece suit casting a formidable shadow over the exquisite banquet table. He stepped around his chair, positioning his broad, masculine body deliberately between Clara and Rosalind. It was a physical shield, an unmistakable declaration of protection that stripped away Rosalind's authority in a single movement.
"Do you believe a housemaid would risk her life in a room full of armed men simply to tell a lie about my mother's baking, Rosalind?" Vincent asked, his deep, measured voice dropping into a lethal register.
Before Rosalind could formulate a defense, a small, quiet voice broke through the tension.
Six-year-old Toby Hale sat perfectly still in his small navy suit and burgundy bow tie. He looked directly at Rosalind, his small hands gripping the edge of the gold-rimmed porcelain plate in front of him. Toby’s brow tightened with quiet, innocent confusion, unable to reconcile the adult lies with what he had been explicitly told.
"You said Daddy wanted Grandma locked," Toby stated clearly.
The devastating impact of the child's truth struck the room like a physical blow. The silence was instantly replaced by the deafening sound of absolute ruin for Rosalind Voss.
Vincent froze. He briefly looked down toward Toby, a profound, agonizing pain passing through his dark eyes as he realized his own son had been weaponized in this horrific deception. The betrayal ran deeper than theft or kidnapping; it was a psychological torture inflicted on his heir.
Vincent slowly turned his head back toward Rosalind. His sharp jaw tightened slightly. The cold, unyielding armor of the mafia boss slammed firmly into place. He held a cold, unwavering stare, locking the manipulative woman in a silent, terrifying promise of absolute retribution.

"Vincent, the boy misunderstood!" Rosalind shrieked, panic finally shattering her elegant facade. "I was trying to protect him from the truth of her illness! I didn't want him to worry! I never said that!"
Vincent did not raise his voice. He did not yell. He simply stared at her, the silence stretching out until the tension became entirely unbearable.
