Chapter 10

The crushing weight of absolute isolation fell over Rosalind Voss. The mahogany study, with its warm light and expensive leather, had become a highly sanitized execution chamber. She looked up at Vincent Hale, realizing that the man she had planned to manipulate and steal from was a terrifying, calculating apex predator who had been ten steps ahead of her entire political family.
"What are you going to do to me?" Rosalind whispered, her voice completely broken, her eyes wide with primal terror.
Vincent did not raise his voice. He did not yell. He simply looked at the woman who had locked his mother in a freezing basement and traumatized his young son.
"Do you believe a traitor deserves the comfort of a quick resolution, or should she sit in the dark and imagine the consequences of her ambition for a few more days?" Vincent asked, turning his broad shoulders away from her.
He didn't wait for her to answer. He looked at the two enforcers standing silently by the heavy oak doors.
"Will you escort this woman to the soundproof holding cells in the sub-basement?" Vincent asked, his voice absolute. "Can you ensure the temperature is dropped, and that she has no access to a telephone?"
"No! Vincent, please!" Rosalind shrieked as the massive men grabbed her arms, hauling her roughly out of the leather chair. "I’ll sign the accounts back over! I’ll leave the country! You can't keep me down there!"
"Are you under the illusion that you will ever speak to another living soul outside of those concrete walls?" Vincent asked softly, watching her thrash wildly as they dragged her toward the door.
The heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting off her frantic, echoing screams with a definitive thud.
The study was instantly plunged back into a profound, ringing silence. Vincent stood perfectly still for a long moment, the adrenaline of the confrontation slowly ebbing from his system, leaving behind a profound, aching exhaustion. He had defended his empire and rescued his mother, but the political fallout with the state senator would inevitably ignite a massive war in the coming days.
He turned and walked out of the study, navigating the sprawling, brightly lit corridors of his mansion until he reached the secure east wing. He stopped outside his mother's private suite and gently pushed the door open.
A warm, crackling fire burned in the large marble hearth. Evelyn was resting comfortably in a plush armchair, wrapped in heavy blankets, sipping a cup of hot tea. On the rug in front of the fire, Toby was fast asleep, his small head resting in Clara’s lap.
The beautiful housemaid was gently stroking the little boy’s hair, her expressive eyes focused on the flames. When she heard the door open, she looked up, her fair, rosy cheeks flushing as she saw Vincent standing in the doorway.
He walked slowly toward her, dropping to one knee on the thick rug beside them. The terrifying aura of the mafia boss vanished entirely, replaced by the profound, unprotected vulnerability of a man looking at the woman who had saved his family.
"Are you unharmed, Clara?" Vincent asked, his deep voice softening into a register he reserved only for her.
"I am safe, Vincent," Clara whispered, offering him a beautiful, tremulous smile. "Is it over?"
May you like
"Is it truly over, Clara, or is this merely the beginning of the life we are going to build together?" Vincent asked, reaching out to gently cup her delicate face with his tattooed hand.
The war with the senator's syndicate was looming on the horizon, threatening to burn the city to the ground, but as Vincent leaned in to press a deep, lingering kiss to Clara's forehead, he knew his empire was finally invincible.
