Chapter 9

The quiet elegance of the mansion was abruptly shattered by the deafening roar of an explosion echoing from the front gates. The crystal chandeliers in the study rattled violently, the warm golden light flickering as the backup generators kicked in. The Whitmore family had not waited the full sixty seconds. The siege had begun.

“Did they honestly think a single explosive would breach my reinforced perimeter?” Silas asked, grabbing a heavy tactical vest and a suppressed submachine gun from a hidden compartment behind his bookshelf.

“They blew the outer gate, Boss, but the inner steel doors are holding,” Vance reported over the sound of distant, rapid gunfire. “Our boys on the roof are pinning them down in the driveway, but Marcus brought a massive force. It’s a bloodbath out there.”

Nora stood frozen by the mahogany desk, her hands clamped tightly over her ears. The sophisticated black maid dress she wore felt absurdly out of place in a room that had suddenly become a war command center. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs, her expressive eyes wide with terror as she watched Silas arm himself.

Silas turned to her, his broad shoulders easily carrying the weight of the tactical gear over his dark trousers and crisp white shirt.

“Will you follow Vance down to the secure bunker beneath the east wing, Nora?” Silas asked, his deep voice cutting clearly through the chaotic noise.

“I want to stay with you!” Nora pleaded, taking a step toward him.

“Do you think I can focus on slaughtering my enemies if I am worried a stray bullet might find you in this room?” Silas asked gently, his tattooed hand reaching out to squeeze her shoulder. “Will you promise me you won’t open that bunker door for anyone except me or Vance?”

“I promise,” Nora wept, her rosy skin pale with fear. “Please, Silas, please come back to me.”

“Have I ever broken a promise to you, Nora?” Silas asked, offering her a fleeting, fiercely protective smile.

He nodded to Vance, who grabbed Nora by the arm and hurried her out of the study and down the back servant corridors.

Silas stepped out into the grand foyer. The cream marble floors were now littered with shattered glass from the high windows. The air was thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and smoke. His enforcers were taking cover behind the carved walnut furniture and heavy marble pillars, returning fire through the breached front doors.

“Are we going to let them disrespect our home and live to tell the tale, men?” Silas roared over the gunfire, his voice booming with absolute, commanding authority.

His men shouted in response, their morale surging at the sight of their boss stepping onto the front lines.

Silas moved with lethal, practiced grace. He took up a position behind a thick marble column near the sweeping staircase. He raised his weapon, his sharp jaw locked in concentration, and peered through the smoke pouring in from the driveway.

“Do you truly believe you can take what is mine, Marcus?” Silas whispered to the dark night, pulling the trigger.
