Chapter 8

Silas returned to the main floor just as the mansion was completely transformed into a fortress. Heavy steel shutters were drawn over the tall windows, blocking out the night sky. Armed guards patrolled the cream marble floors, their weapons starkly contrasting with the gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers.
He walked back into his private study. Nora was still there, but she had moved from the armchair to the large mahogany desk. She had prepared a cup of dark coffee for him, a quiet, domestic gesture amidst the impending violence. Her unevenly cropped hair, held back by the white ruffled headband, framed her delicate, expressive eyes.
“Will this coffee give me the energy I need to finish this night, Nora?” Silas asked gently, accepting the porcelain cup from her hands.
“It’s strong, just how you like it,” Nora whispered, her voice trembling. “Silas, I heard the guards talking in the hallway. Marcus Whitmore is already mobilizing. He’s sending a convoy to the gates. You are going to fight them yourself.”
“Did you think I would hide in the basement while my men bleed to protect my home?” Silas asked, taking a slow sip of the coffee.
“I don't want you to die for me!” Nora cried, the tears she had been fighting finally spilling over her rosy cheeks. “I am just a maid, Silas! I have no money, no powerful family, no alliances to offer you. I am not worth a war!”
Silas set the coffee cup down on the desk with a sharp, decisive clatter. He closed the distance between them in two long strides, his heavily tattooed hands reaching out to gently cup her face. He forced her to look directly into his dark, unwavering eyes.
“Do you truly believe your worth is measured by the balance of a bank account or the name of a corrupt father?” Silas asked, his deep voice vibrating with absolute, unyielding devotion.
“I bring nothing but danger to you,” Nora sobbed, leaning into his warm palms.
“Have you not brought light into a house that was drowning in darkness?” Silas asked, his thumbs gently brushing the tears from her fair skin. “Do you not understand that my wealth and my power are entirely meaningless if I cannot use them to protect the woman I love?”
Nora’s breath hitched. She reached up, her small hands gripping his strong wrists. “I am so terrified, Silas.”
“Will you trust me to keep you safe, Nora?” Silas asked, lowering his face until his forehead rested gently against hers.
Before Nora could answer, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open. Vance stood in the doorway, a heavy assault rifle slung across his chest. His face was pale and grim.
“Boss, they’re here,” Vance said breathlessly. “Marcus bypassed the warning protocols. He’s brought three dozen men to the main gate. They’re armed with heavy artillery, and they’re demanding we surrender Daphne in sixty seconds, or they breach the walls.”

Silas did not flinch. He slowly pulled back from Nora, his angular face hardening into a mask of pure, lethal authority.
“Are the snipers in position on the roof?” Silas asked, stepping away from the desk.
