Chapter 5

The sprawling banquet hall fell silent once more. The ivory candles continued to glow warmly in their ornate brass candelabras, and the crystal glasses sat abandoned on the long table. The immediate threat had been physically removed, but the heavy, looming shadow of the impending war with the southern syndicate hung thickly in the air.

Silas turned his broad shoulders, his gaze sweeping across the empty room before settling back on the beautiful maid standing near the head of the table. The violent chaos of his world had fully breached the walls of his home, but his only concern in that moment was the trembling woman before him.

He walked slowly back to Nora. The fierce, terrifying mafia boss vanished entirely as he stopped in front of her. His angular face relaxed, the sharp lines of his jaw softening as he looked deeply into her expressive eyes. The quiet, unspoken affection that had simmered between them for months was no longer a secret; it was a declared truth, paid for in shattered alliances.

“May I touch your hair, Nora?” Silas asked, his deep voice carrying a profound, protective warmth.

Nora looked up at him, her fair, rosy skin flushed. She nodded slowly, her hands clutching the fabric of her white apron.

Silas reached out, his tattooed fingers gently grazing the jagged, unevenly cropped ends of her hair just beneath her white ruffled maid headband. His touch was incredibly light, reverent, and filled with a suppressed fury directed only at the woman who had done this to her.

“Did they hurt you anywhere else when they held you down?” Silas asked, his dark eyes scanning her delicate features for any signs of bruising.

“Only my pride, sir,” Nora whispered, a fresh tear escaping to trace a path down her cheek. “I am so sorry, Silas. I didn't mean to cause a war. I should have just worn a tighter bun and hidden it.”

“Do you place so little value on your own dignity that you would suffer in silence just to secure my political alliances?” Silas asked, his thumb gently brushing away her tear.

“I wasn't protecting her,” Nora wept, leaning slightly into his warm palm. “I was protecting you. I know how important the Whitmore alliance is. I didn't want to be the reason it fell apart.”

“Would you have me bow to a family that thinks nothing of crushing your spirit, Nora?” Silas asked gently.

“It’s just hair,” Nora reasoned desperately, trying to convince both of them. “It will grow back. But Marcus Whitmore will kill you for locking his daughter in a cell. Please, Silas, you have to let her go.”

“Do you think I would ever choose an empire of dirt and blood over the woman who holds my heart?” Silas asked, his voice thick with unmasked emotion.

Nora’s breath hitched. Her expressive eyes widened in shock and overwhelming relief. He had finally said it.

“Shall we retire to my private study, away from this cold room, while I figure out our next move?” Silas asked, offering her his arm.
