Chapter 5

Evelyn created the language around Finn.

That became clear from the messages.

Soft.

Dependent.

Unstable under pressure.

Overattached to Mara.

Unable to follow instructions.

All descriptions of a three-year-old written like a performance review.

One message from Evelyn to Victor read:

If he cannot manage a child’s kart without hysterics, imagine him carrying the Savelli name later.

I stared at her.

“You wrote this.”

She lifted her chin.

“Yes.”

“You judged a toddler against a future role I never gave him.”

“Mara, powerful families plan.”

“Good families also raise children.”

Silence.

Another message:

Declan needs witnesses, not arguments.

There.

The phone.

The livestream.

Not documentation.

Witness manufacturing.

Evelyn wanted capos to see Finn crying so later nobody could say Declan invented the weakness.

She forgot one problem.

The camera showed how they created it.

I looked at her.

“You wanted witnesses.”

She said nothing.

“You got one you didn’t plan for.”

Her eyes moved toward me.

Me.

I arrived carrying a birthday present.

Not strategy.

Not suspicion.

That was why they failed.

Cruel people often become careless when the person they fear is supposed to be somewhere else.
