Chapter 5

The crackling of the ornate marble fireplace was the only sound that dared to interrupt the heavy, suffocating tension in the room. Estelle’s chest heaved rapidly under her satin gown. The engagement ring on her finger felt incredibly heavy, a symbol of an alliance that was rapidly disintegrating before her very eyes.
"We are supposed to be partners, Adrian!" Estelle cried out, her voice echoing off the gilded wall panels. "My family brings the southern ports to your syndicate! We bring millions in legitimate real estate! Are you really willing to burn our families' treaty to the ground because I disciplined a disobedient servant?"
"Did you discipline her, or did you attempt to break her?" Adrian asked, stopping just a few feet away from where Estelle stood. His masculine presence, broad shoulders, and unyielding posture forced Estelle to instinctively take a half-step backward.
Vera swallowed another bite of food, the nourishment slowly bringing the color back to her delicate cheekbones. She wanted nothing more than to slip out of the room, to disappear into the servant's quarters, but Henry was still holding onto her sleeve. The boy looked up at his father, entirely unafraid of the cold, ruthless mafia boss, seeing only the man who was currently protecting them.
"She wouldn't listen to me!" Estelle defended herself, tears of absolute rage springing to her eyes. "She always looks at you! Have you seen the way she looks at you? Like she belongs here! Like she isn't just someone we pay to scrub the marble!"
"Does her looking at me threaten you, Estelle?" Adrian asked, tilting his head slightly. The loose strands of hair on his forehead cast sharp shadows over his observant eyes.
"She is a whore!" Estelle shrieked, losing whatever shreds of dignity she had left. "You think I don't see it? You think I don't see the way you watch her? You pull her chair out for her while I stand here humiliated!"
"Did you show my son the woman you truly are tonight?" Adrian inquired, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly register.
Estelle froze. She looked past Adrian’s broad shoulders and locked eyes with six-year-old Henry. The boy’s face was a mask of quiet judgment. He didn't look scared of her; he looked deeply disappointed.
"Henry, darling, you know I love you," Estelle tried to pivot, her voice suddenly dripping with a sickening, manufactured sweetness. She took a step toward the boy, reaching her hand out. "I was only trying to make sure the staff knew their place so our home could run perfectly for you."
Henry didn't flinch, but Vera instinctively shifted her body, placing herself slightly between the boy and Estelle. It was a subtle, protective movement, but it did not go unnoticed by the cold, observant eyes of the mafia boss.
"Did I ask for your help raising my son, Estelle?" Adrian asked, his voice slicing through her pathetic attempt at manipulation.
Estelle pulled her hand back as if she had been burned. Her jaw tightened, the muscles ticking beneath her fair skin. The realization was finally dawn upon her. Adrian was not negotiating. He was not arguing. He was dismantling her entirely through a relentless barrage of Socratic interrogation, trapping her in the web of her own cruelty.

"What do you want from me, Adrian?" Estelle whispered, her voice completely broken.
"Do you truly believe you still have something I want?" Adrian asked.
