Chapter 10

Vera looked up at the towering, terrifying man who had just dismantled an empire and banished a queen to protect her. Her softly heart-shaped face was still pale, but the agonizing hunger that had plagued her for two days was entirely gone, replaced by a profound, electric shock of adrenaline.
"I am unharmed, sir," Vera whispered, her voice shaking slightly as she gently stroked Henry's hair. "But... but what happens now? The Warren family won't just let this go. Her father might have agreed on the phone, but he will seek revenge."
"Do you believe I am unprepared for a war, Vera?" Adrian asked, stepping closer to the head of the table.
He reached out, his large, tattooed hand gently brushing a loose strand of dark hair away from her delicate cheekbone. The touch was incredibly soft, a shocking contrast to the violence he had just inflicted upon the guards. Vera’s breath hitched, her fair, rosy skin flushing deeply under his intense gaze.
"Why did you do this for me?" Vera asked, finally finding the courage to look directly into his cold, observant eyes. "I am just a maid. I am entirely replaceable."
"Is a woman who shows my son the only true kindness he has ever known in this house replaceable?" Adrian inquired, his voice a low, intimate rumble that vibrated through the quiet dining room.
Vera swallowed hard, completely lost in the magnetic pull of his presence. The rigid boundaries of class, wealth, and danger had been completely obliterated in the span of a single evening. She looked at the sleeping boy in her arms, then back up to the mafia boss who was looking at her not as a servant, but as something infinitely more valuable.
"What do you want me to do, Mr. Lockwood?" Vera asked softly.
"Will you stay here with us, Vera?" Adrian asked, his gaze dropping briefly to her lips before meeting her eyes again. "Not as staff. Not in a uniform. Will you remain under my protection?"
Before Vera could answer, before she could even process the massive, terrifying implications of what he was offering, the heavy walnut doors of the dining room swung open once more.
Adrian did not flinch, but his posture instantly shifted back into that of a predator. He turned his broad shoulders toward the entrance.
Standing in the doorway was a man Vera had never seen before. He wore a sharply tailored suit, much like Adrian's, but his face was weathered, marked by a long, jagged scar that ran down his jawline. He was out of breath, clutching a bloody radio in his hand.
"Did the perimeter fall, Marcus?" Adrian asked, his voice instantly turning to ice.
"Worse, boss," Marcus gasped, leaning against the doorframe, his eyes darting frantically to Vera and the sleeping boy. "The Warrens didn't attack from the outside. They had a mole in the security detail. They rigged the garage."
"Is the convoy compromised?" Adrian asked sharply.
"The cars are gone," Marcus said grimly. "And they cut the hardlines. We have no external communications. We are entirely trapped inside the estate, and there are at least thirty heavily armed men moving up the driveway right now."
May you like
Adrian looked at Marcus, then turned back to Vera. The golden light of the cascading crystal chandeliers suddenly felt less like luxury and more like the glaring lights of an inescapable cage. The war hadn't been avoided; it had simply been brought to their front door.
"Are you ready to run, Vera?" Adrian asked.
