Chapter 1

Cascading crystal chandeliers bathed the massive dining room in a warm, decadent golden light, illuminating a scene of breathtaking opulence. Tall ivory candles burned steadily in heavy silver candelabras, their flickering flames casting dancing shadows across the pristine white roses, crystal glasses, and fine porcelain that adorned the endless dining table. Gilded wall panels depicting mythological conquests framed the room, while a roaring fire crackled within an ornate marble fireplace, sending waves of heat across the polished walnut furniture and champagne velvet chairs. The air was thick with the scent of roasted meats, rich truffles, and expensive perfumes, a sensory overload that was slowly driving Vera Sutton out of her mind.

Vera, dressed in a sophisticated black maid’s dress with a cinched waist and a short A-line skirt, stood near the edge of the room, her hands folded over her neatly tied white apron. She was beautiful, with a softly heart-shaped face and delicate cheekbones that were currently shadowed by profound exhaustion. Her dark hair was arranged in a neat low bun, the crisp white collar and cuffs of her uniform stark against her fair, rosy skin. Despite her graceful proportions, every breath she took was a battle against the hollow, gnawing ache in her stomach. She had not eaten in over thirty-six hours.

At the head of the table stood Adrian Lockwood, a movie-star handsome mafia boss who commanded the room without saying a word. His broad shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit with lethal perfection. He possessed an angular face with a sharply defined jaw, his extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble adding a rugged edge to his aristocratic features. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell over his forehead. Refined, elegantly spaced tattoos decorated his hands and fingers, catching the golden light as he adjusted the heavy family signet ring on his finger. A small, artistic tattoo peeked out from above his collar, resting on his neck. His cold, observant eyes tracked every movement in the room.

Across from him sat Estelle Warren, his newly minted fiancée. She was a vision of sculpted satin, her evening gown wrapping around her like liquid midnight. Diamond earrings flashed brilliantly every time she laughed, and the massive engagement ring on her finger acted as a heavy anchor of her newfound power. Estelle maintained a gracious, polite public manner, smiling at the capos, politicians, and socialites gathered to celebrate their union. Yet, behind the polished veneer, she ruled the household staff with a cruel, iron fist, systematically denying Vera meal breaks for the past two days out of sheer, jealous spite.

Beside Adrian’s empty chair sat his six-year-old son, Henry. The boy looked remarkably composed in his formal dinner jacket, white shirt, and polished shoes, though his eyes were uniquely empathetic for a child raised in a crime family.

Vera moved gracefully toward the table, her slender hands carrying a silver platter. She approached Henry, her vision blurring slightly at the edges as the smell of the rich food hit her senses. Her hands trembled, completely invisible to the guests, but fiercely felt within her own bones as she prepared to serve the boy.

"Would you care for the lamb, Master Henry?" Vera asked softly, her voice strained as she fought the dizzying wave of sheer hunger.

Henry looked up at her, his young face pulling into a tight frown. He looked at the food, then looked at the hollow shadows beneath Vera's beautiful, expressive brows. The boy made his choice.
