Chapter 7

The ringing silence that followed the crash was suffocating. The bright, natural sunlight poured over the ruined terrace, highlighting the total devastation of the banquet. Celina remained on her hands and knees in the spilled champagne, shaking violently, too terrified to even look up. The fair, rosy skin of the assembled guests had turned a uniform, sickly white. They stared at the shattered crystal and ruined cakes, realizing that the unwritten rules of the Montaro family had just been violently rewritten.

Lucille stood frozen a few feet away, her breath coming in shallow, panicked gasps. The sixty-eight-year-old matriarch clutched her pearl necklace, her eyes wide with shock. She had spent decades ruling the family with cruel, psychological precision, firmly believing that her status made her untouchable. The sheer, raw physical dominance of her nephew shattered that illusion completely.

Rafael slowly stepped over a crushed, three-tier cake, the polished leather of his shoes crunching on broken porcelain. He stopped just inches away from his aunt, his towering, intimidating presence casting a dark shadow over her.

"Rafael," Lucille stammered, her crisp American accent trembling for the first time in her life. She tried to muster her usual authority, but her voice cracked. "You... you have lost your mind. Over a child’s tantrum! You have disgraced us in front of the entire syndicate!"

Rafael did not raise his voice. He leaned in slightly, the loose strands of his wavy hair falling over his forehead, masking the cold, dead eyes of a killer.

"You reject my son," Rafael whispered. His voice was quiet, lethal, and absolute. He let the words hang in the air, ensuring every syllable carried the weight of a death sentence. "I reject... this family."

Lucille’s face became a portrait of pure, unadulterated fright. The color drained entirely from her lips. She understood the true implication of his words. Rafael wasn't just throwing a fit; he was formally severing the bloodline ties that kept them safe. Without his protection, without his brutal enforcement on the streets, the extended Montaro family was completely defenseless against their rivals.

"You cannot do that," Lucille breathed, taking a terrified step backward. "You are bound by blood! Your father built this syndicate for all of us! You cannot just walk away and leave us unprotected!"

"I am... the syndicate," Rafael corrected softly, his words slow and measured. "And my son... is my blood. You are nothing... but parasites... feeding on my labor."

He slowly raised his hand, the artistic tattoos on his fingers flexing.

At that exact moment, the heavily armed bodyguards stationed around the perimeter of the garden moved in terrifying unison. They did not move toward Rafael to restrain him. They moved past the trembling guests, past the ruined table, and stepped uniformly into place directly behind Lucille and Celina, blocking any path of retreat.

The shift in power was absolute. The men with the guns did not answer to the matriarch. They answered to the king.
