Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured over the sprawling private estate, bathing the manicured gardens in brilliant, cinematic light. There was not a single trace of a yellow tint in the air; the sky was a piercing, vivid blue, and the vibrant emerald of the lawns contrasted perfectly with the stark white linens draping the outdoor banquet tables. It was a flawless summer day. The guests, an elite gathering of white American adults draped in their finest formal attire, mingled across the stone terrace. Their fair, rosy skin glowed with health and generational wealth. Crisp American accents floated through the bright atmosphere as champagne flutes clinked and deals were quietly struck beneath the shade of the blooming oak trees.
At the edge of the terrace, standing slightly apart from the main crowd, Rafael Montaro commanded the space without having to lift a finger. At thirty-two years old, Rafael was breathtakingly handsome, possessing the chiseled, flawless features of a classic movie star. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, though a few loose strands fell effortlessly over his forehead, lending him a charming, almost romantic look. But there was nothing soft about him. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were framed by an extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His eyes were cold, sharp, and deeply intimidating—the eyes of a veteran Mafia Boss who missed absolutely nothing.
He wore a dark, meticulously tailored suit, the crisp white dress shirt beneath it unbuttoned at the chest. The open collar revealed fair, rosy skin and the edges of refined, sharp artistic tattoos that crept up his neck. The ink was moderate and neatly placed, utilizing enough negative space to avoid looking dense, creating a look that was exceptionally attractive yet undeniably dangerous. Similar sharp designs decorated his hands and fingers, ending just before his heavy gold signet ring.
"The shipments from the northern docks have been delayed by federal inspectors," a broad-shouldered capo named Vincent said, keeping his voice respectful as he stood before his boss.
Rafael did not immediately reply. He took a slow, measured breath, his cold eyes scanning the garden. When he finally spoke, his volume was terrifyingly low, forcing the men around him to lean in.
"We do not... tolerate delays," Rafael said, his slow, controlled pauses making every word sound like a drawn blade. "You will find the inspector. You will remind him... of his obligations to this family."
"Of course, Boss. It will be handled tonight," Vincent assured him quickly, eager to please the imposing leader. "Should we bring the harbor master into the conversation as well?"
"Only if he... forgets his place," Rafael murmured, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt.
While Rafael conducted the brutal business of the family, a much softer scene was unfolding near the kitchen entrance. Three-year-old Emmett, Rafael’s son, stepped carefully onto the stone terrace. The little boy was dressed impeccably in an elegant, miniature banquet outfit, complete with polished dress shoes that clicked softly against the stone. His fair, rosy cheeks were flushed with intense concentration. In his small, trembling hands, he held a small ceramic plate carrying a messy, misshapen slice of homemade blackberry cobbler. He had spent the entire morning in the kitchen, determined to share his creation with the family.

"Careful, little man," one of the passing bodyguards smiled, stepping aside to let the boy pass.
"I made it," Emmett proudly announced, his tiny voice cutting through the heavy atmosphere of the Mafia gathering. "It's for Auntie Lucille."
