Chapter 8

The heat of the cascading crystal chandeliers felt suffocating to Vivian as she stood trapped behind the polished walnut table. The entire room—hundreds of the most dangerous men in the country—was staring at her, waiting for her to answer the mafia boss. There was nowhere to run, no lie left that could salvage the situation. The undeniable proof of her betrayal was standing right next to Declan, holding onto his tailored trouser leg.
"I burned them," Vivian confessed, her voice cracking, a desperate, hysterical sob tearing from her throat.
The admission echoed off the gilded ceiling moldings, sealing her fate.
"For us," Vivian added, clutching her chest, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as a mocking reminder of the future she had just incinerated. "Can't you see that? I did it for us! If you had known about him, you would have gone back to her! You would have thrown away the alliance! I burned them to save our empire!"
Declan briefly looked down at Elora and Asher. The cold, intimidating aura that usually surrounded him fractured for a fleeting second. He looked at the beautiful housemaid who had suffered in silence, and the small boy who had only wanted to give his father a cupcake. A look of profound, quiet tenderness passed over his angular face. It was a look of deep, sorrowful regret for the time that had been stolen from them, and a silent promise that they would never be separated again.
Then, Declan slowly shifted his eyes back toward Vivian.
The tenderness vanished instantly, replaced by the freezing, unforgiving void of a ruthless killer. His head followed his gaze in a slight, deliberate turn, the small neck tattoo shifting above his collar. His sharply defined jaw tightened almost imperceptibly, setting into unyielding granite.
"Do you know what happens to those who steal from me, Vivian?" Declan asked, his deep, low voice vibrating through the crystal stemware on the table.
Vivian stumbled backward, her sculpted satin gown catching on the velvet chair. "Declan, please! I love you! I did it because I love you!"
"Do you understand the penalty for keeping my blood in the shadows?" Declan inquired, taking another slow, measured step toward her, his powerful shoulders blocking her only path of escape.
"My father will not stand for this!" Vivian shrieked, grasping at the last, desperate straw of her family's power. "If you touch me, the alliance is dead! He will start a war!"
"Did you really think you would survive this night?" Declan asked softly.

He didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't signal for his guards. He simply stopped moving, his tall, tailored frame dominating the space. He held Vivian’s eyes in a cold, steady, unwavering stare.
The silence in the room was absolute, heavy with the terrifying promise of impending violence. The warm golden light illuminated every face, capturing the sheer horror dawning in Vivian's eyes as she realized the depth of her fatal mistake. The guests held their breath, waiting for the execution to begin, as the mafia boss stared down the woman who had stolen his family, leaving the room suffocating in the deadly, unyielding silence of a man who had finally found the truth.
