Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers cast a bright, airy, and luminous glow across the grand dining hall of the sprawling mansion. There was a soft, elegant warmth to the room, free from any heavy yellow cast or muddy orange tint. The clear lighting produced gentle golden highlights that danced across the gilded ceiling moldings, the pristine ivory-paneled walls, and the sweeping marble fireplace. The sheer volume of the illumination clearly revealed the entire room, leaving no dark corners for secrets to hide. It illuminated the fair, natural rosy skin tones of the American elite gathered around the polished walnut tables. Tall ivory candles flickered in ornate silver candelabras, surrounded by immaculate white roses, sparkling crystal stemware, and fine porcelain plates. It was a crowded evening birthday banquet, a celebration of power masked as a social gathering.
At the head table sat Declan Westbrook. He was a mafia boss, yet he possessed the refined, movie-star handsome features of a silver-screen leading man. He was distinctly masculine, his broad, powerful shoulders filling out a tailored dark three-piece suit with effortless grace. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were framed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally slicked back, though a few loose strands fell over his forehead, giving him a charming, romantic look that sharply contrasted with his cold, intimidating eyes.
"Are the perimeter guards stationed at the southern gates?" Declan asked, his deep, low voice barely rising above a whisper. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses between his words. Every sentence sounded measured, cold, and entirely dangerous.
"Yes, Mr. Westbrook," a capo replied, leaning in close to the velvet dining chair. "The grounds are completely secure."
"Have you verified the guest list against the security manifest?" Declan inquired, his artistic, refined hand resting on the walnut table. The tattoos on his hands and fingers featured sharp designs with generous negative space, looking elegant rather than dense. The heavy family signet ring gleamed on his finger beside a polished wristwatch.
"Every name is accounted for, sir," the capo assured him quickly.
Vivian Rowe sat beside Declan’s left shoulder, the very picture of high-society perfection. She wore a sculpted satin evening gown that draped flawlessly over her fair skin. Diamond earrings caught the luminous light, matching the massive engagement ring that rested heavily on her left hand.
"The evening is going beautifully, isn't it?" Vivian asked a wealthy senator's wife seated across from them. "I made sure the floral arrangements were exactly what Declan prefers."
"It is simply magnificent, Vivian," the woman replied, her rosy cheeks lifting in a wide smile. "You are the perfect hostess. You must be so proud of everything you’ve put together tonight."
"Does anyone truly believe a banquet requires this much fanfare?" Declan asked, not looking at Vivian, his cold, observant eyes scanning the crowded room.
May you like
"Oh, stop it, darling," Vivian laughed, placing a manicured hand lightly on his tailored sleeve. "You know you deserve to be celebrated. Isn't that right, ladies?"
The women at the table offered a chorus of polite, nervous agreements. Declan did not smile. He adjusted his collar, revealing a small, artistic tattoo on his neck, his mind clearly miles away from the champagne and velvet chairs.
