Chapter 6

The single word struck the room with the force of a physical blow. Elora stood tall, her elegant posture unwavering despite the sheer terror coursing through her veins. Her white apron and ruffled maid headband seemed entirely incongruous with the massive, life-altering truth she had just dropped into the lap of the mafia king.

"I am not here for your money," Elora continued, her voice remarkably steady. She looked down at the tiny, homemade cupcake sitting on the fine porcelain plate. "He just wanted to give you his cupcake for your birthday."

Declan stared at the simple pastry, the stark contrast between the humble offering and the lavish, opulent surroundings hitting him with a profound sense of loss. Four years. He had missed four years of his son's life.

"If this child is truly yours, why have you kept him hidden in the shadows for so long?" a senior capo dared to ask from the adjacent table, his voice laced with suspicion. "Why appear now, on the eve of the boss's wedding?"

Elora did not look at the capo. She kept her tear-filled eyes locked securely on Declan.

"I didn't hide him," Elora said, her voice cracking slightly under the emotional weight of the memory. "I wrote every month. I sent them to this house. I sent pictures. I begged you to meet him."

Declan’s broad, powerful shoulders went completely rigid. The air in his lungs seemed to evaporate. He stared at the beautiful housemaid, his mind racing to process the impossibility of her words.

"You wrote to me?" Declan asked, his deep, low voice vibrating with a dangerous, barely suppressed fury. The controlled pause that followed was suffocating. "Are you telling me you sent letters to this estate?"

"Yes," Elora whispered, a single tear finally escaping and tracing a path down her fair, rosy cheek. "Why did you never reply? Why did you leave us alone?"

The devastation in her voice was absolute. Declan felt a cold, murderous realization creeping into his bones. He had never received a single letter. He had believed she had simply walked away, abandoning their quiet romance without a word. He had spent years hardening his heart, building his empire, and agreeing to a loveless, strategic marriage, all because he thought she didn't want him.

"Do you honestly believe I would ignore the existence of my own son?" Declan asked, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.

Before Elora could answer, Declan moved. With a fluid, predatory grace, he rose from his champagne velvet chair. He stood to his full, imposing height, his tailored dark suit acting as a physical barrier. He stepped out from behind the polished walnut table and moved directly beside Elora and Asher.

He slowly knelt on one knee, completely ignoring the expensive fabric of his trousers against the hardwood floor. He brought his angular face down to Asher's level. The little boy in the knitted vest looked at him with wide, innocent eyes.

Declan reached out his hand, the artistic, refined tattoos on his fingers stark against the fair skin of his son. He rested a gentle, incredibly tender hand on Asher’s small shoulder. The protective gesture was absolute, an undeniable claim of paternity that sent a shockwave through the room.
