Chapter 4

Giselle recoiled as if she had been physically struck, stumbling backward in her expensive heels until her spine hit the mahogany bookshelves. Her breath came in short, jagged gasps, her chest rising and falling rapidly beneath the sculpted bodice of her evening gown. She realized she was losing control of the narrative, losing her grip on the luxurious life she had ruthlessly carved out for herself. Desperation fueled a sudden, vicious counterattack. She pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at the beautiful housemaid standing quietly by the armchair.

“This is her doing!” Giselle shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly in the confined space of the study. “Look at her, Nathaniel! Look at this treacherous little rat in her maid’s uniform! Elise has been plotting against me since the day you brought me into this house! She wants my life! She wants my position! She paid this old woman to come here and spin this elaborate fantasy just to break our engagement!”

Elise did not flinch under the verbal assault. Her expressive brows drew together in a look of quiet disgust, her delicate cheekbones catching the dim green light from the desk lamp. She smoothed her white apron with elegant composure, refusing to lower herself to the former nurse’s level of hysteria.

Nathaniel reached into his vest pocket and withdrew a pristine white handkerchief. He methodically wiped the lingering dampness from his heavily tattooed fingers, his face an unreadable mask of stone. He did not look at Elise. He kept his cold, observant eyes locked onto his fiancée’s terrified, sweating face.

“Do you honestly believe I am naive enough to think a housemaid could fabricate a conspiracy of this magnitude?”

Giselle swallowed hard, her eyes darting frantically around the room as if searching for an escape route that didn't exist. “She is a manipulator, Nathaniel! She is jealous of everything we have built together!”

Nathaniel stepped out from behind the heavy oak desk, moving with the slow, deliberate grace of a predator cornering its prey. He closed the distance between them until he was standing mere inches from Giselle. The sheer size of his powerful shoulders blocked out the light, casting her completely in his shadow. She shrank against the books, trembling violently.

“What makes you think I value the frantic screaming of a cornered woman over the quiet conviction of the people standing behind me?”

“Because I love you!” Giselle cried out, tears ruining her immaculate makeup, streaking black mascara down her pale cheeks. “Because I have been loyal to you for four years! I nursed your wife in her final days! I was there for you when your world collapsed!”

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched, the muscles ticking violently beneath his neatly trimmed stubble. The mention of his late wife seemed to suck all the remaining oxygen out of the room. He leaned in so close that his voice was a mere vibration against her skin.

“Are you suggesting your presence in my bed makes you immune to my justice?”

He turned his head slightly, shifting his focus to the young maid who had systematically dismantled his reality in the span of thirty minutes.

“Elise, how exactly did you uncover a secret that has been buried in this house for four years?”

Elise stepped forward, her dark eyes flashing with fierce intelligence. “I did not look for it, sir. But I clean the suites. I do the laundry. And I pay attention.” She reached into the deep pocket of her black A-line skirt and withdrew a small, worn, black leather notebook. “I found this hidden in the false bottom of Miss Voss’s jewelry box. It contains a ledger. And it contains names.”
