Chapter 1

The crowded evening engagement dinner inside Nathaniel Cross’s sprawling mansion was an overwhelming display of opulence, wealth, and unspoken danger. High above the dining hall, cascading crystal chandeliers cast a heavy, warm golden light across the room, illuminating the pristine ivory wall panels and the intricate gilded moldings that framed the ceiling. A massive marble fireplace crackled softly at the far end of the hall, though the flames did little to chase away the inherent chill of the mafia boss's domain. Tall, slender wax candles glowed fiercely in ornate silver candelabras, positioned deliberately among sprawling centerpieces of white roses, fine translucent porcelain, and glittering crystal stemware. The polished walnut tables were surrounded by champagne velvet chairs, filled with the city’s most dangerous and influential elite.
At the head table sat Nathaniel Cross, a man whose reputation was as ruthless as his appearance was commanding. He was movie-star handsome, with powerful shoulders that filled out a flawlessly tailored dark three-piece suit. His angular face, defined by a high-bridged nose and a spectacularly sharp jaw, was shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was swept back with immaculate precision. A heavy gold signet ring and a luxury wristwatch caught the candlelight, while refined, intricate tattoos crawled across his knuckles and fingers. A small, dark tattoo peeked above his collar, marking his neck. His cold, observant eyes surveyed the room in absolute silence.
Beside his left shoulder stood his fiancée, Giselle Voss, a former maternity nurse turned underworld queen. She was breathtaking in a sculpted satin evening gown that clung to her curves, her ears dripping with diamond earrings that matched the massive engagement ring on her finger.
But the delicate equilibrium of the evening shattered when Elise Warren approached the head table. Elise, a housemaid of movie-star beauty, possessed a striking heart-shaped face, highly expressive brows, and delicate cheekbones. Her dark hair was gathered perfectly into a soft, low bun. She wore a fitted black maid dress with a cinched waist, a short A-line skirt, and a pristine white apron, collar, and cuffs. She looked incredibly elegant and polished as she guided an elderly woman toward an empty seat on Nathaniel’s right.
Agnes Bell, a seventy-four-year-old retired midwife, wore a plain formal dress layered beneath a thick knitted shawl. She leaned heavily on a wooden walking cane, her frail body moving with painful slowness, yet her eyes remained incredibly lucid and sharp.
Elise leaned over the polished walnut, gracefully placing a crystal glass of water before Agnes. The elderly woman steadied the heavy glass, her weathered fingers trembling against the condensation. Giselle’s eyes darted downward, and sudden recognition slammed into her. Giselle’s knuckles turned bone-white as her fingers tightened viciously around the slender stem of her champagne glass.
Nathaniel’s cold eyes tracked the microscopic shift in the atmosphere. He noticed the exchanged look of sheer terror. He looked directly into Elise’s eyes, speaking slowly, his deep, quiet voice commanding absolute obedience. Every guest in the vast hall stopped eating, their conversations dying instantly as they turned toward their boss.
“Elise, who is this woman?”
Giselle forced a desperate, reassuring smile, her eyes frantically searching Nathaniel’s terrifyingly calm expression for any sign of acceptance. “Just a retired nurse, darling.”
Elise held Nathaniel’s piercing gaze, her rosy lips trembling slightly. “Your twins weren't stillborn.”
May you like
Agnes looked directly at the trembling bride-to-be. Moisture gathered along the old woman’s lower eyelids, and she spoke with firm, deliberate clarity. “You sold them, Giselle.”
Nathaniel looked briefly toward the frail midwife, the catastrophic weight of her words sinking in. Slowly, he shifted his gaze toward Giselle, followed by a slight, predatory turn of his head. His sharp jaw tightened, and his expression settled into a mask of cold, controlled fury.
