Chapter 2

The ensuing silence inside the grand dining hall was absolute, suffocating, and terrifyingly heavy. The clinking of silver against fine porcelain had ceased entirely. The soft, ambient jazz that had been drifting from the string quartet in the corner stuttered to an awkward, horrific halt. Hundreds of powerful, dangerous guests held their breath, their eyes darting nervously between the head table and the exits. Nobody dared to move a muscle while the apex predator of the city processed the magnitude of the betrayal laid bare before him.

Giselle’s faint, reassuring smile shattered into a grimace of pure panic. The sculpted satin of her evening gown seemed to lose its luster as a cold sweat broke out across her collarbones. Her chest heaved, the diamond earrings trembling violently against her neck as she opened her mouth, desperately searching for a lie that could save her life. She reached a shaking hand toward Nathaniel’s tailored sleeve, attempting to bridge the sudden, cavernous physical distance that had opened up between them.

Nathaniel did not pull away. He simply stared at her extended hand until her fingers curled inward and dropped back to her side. His cold, observant eyes remained locked onto her pale face, his thick, slightly wavy hair catching the golden glow of the crystal chandeliers above. He leaned forward, resting his tattooed hands flat against the polished walnut table.

“Why is your hand shaking, Giselle?”

Giselle swallowed hard, her throat clicking audibly in the deadened room. “Nathaniel, please, this is a horrific prank. She is a sick, senile old woman! You cannot possibly believe this insanity!”

Nathaniel’s sharp jaw ticked, the neatly trimmed stubble grazing his stiff, immaculate collar. The small tattoo on his neck flexed as he tilted his head ever so slightly toward the terrified guests who were still watching them with morbid fascination.

“Do you think I invite my associates here to watch my fiancée make a fool of herself in my own home?”

He turned his gaze back to Giselle, his deep, quiet voice vibrating with a lethal, contained energy that promised imminent violence.

“Did you truly believe a disruption of this magnitude could occur under my roof by accident?”

Before Giselle could utter another frantic defense, Nathaniel stood up to his full, imposing height. He adjusted his tailored dark vest and shot a singular, commanding glance at the heavy oak doors at the back of the hall. Instantly, a dozen men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows of the ivory wall panels, their hands resting ominously on their holstered weapons.

Nathaniel looked out over his hundreds of silent guests.

“Are you all waiting for an invitation to leave my property?”

The room erupted into a flurry of chaotic, suppressed movement. Chairs scraped loudly against the marble floors. High-heeled leather shoes clicked frantically toward the exits as the city’s criminal elite practically sprinted to escape the blast radius of Nathaniel Cross’s wrath.

Elise Warren remained perfectly still, her pristine white apron stark against her black dress. She stood protectively behind Agnes’s velvet chair, her hands resting gently on the old woman’s frail shoulders. She had successfully orchestrated this confrontation, persuading the terrified midwife to risk everything to tell the mafia boss the truth about his bloodline. Now, they were in the eye of the storm.

Nathaniel waited until the massive dining hall was completely empty, save for his guards, his trembling fiancée, the beautiful housemaid, and the weeping, frail midwife. He stepped out from behind the head table, the soles of his polished leather shoes echoing sharply against the marble floor.

He gestured toward the grand hallway leading deeper into the sprawling mansion.

“Shall we take this conversation to my study?”
