Chapter 9

As the morning progressed, the heavy machinery of the mafia syndicate began to churn outside the walls, dealing with the fallout of the Rowe family's destruction. Capos arrived for meetings, ledgers were balanced, and territories were divided. But Lucian remained in the private wing, prioritizing the fragile peace he had finally secured.
Later that afternoon, Lucian and Elena walked together through the pristine rose gardens. The clean whites and gentle golden highlights of the sun caught the edges of the blooming flowers, a stark contrast to the violence of the previous night.
"Will you be able to handle this life, Elena?" Lucian asked, stopping near a marble fountain. His tone was serious, his cold, observant eyes searching her face. "Will the violence of my world chase away the gentleness in yours?"
"Do you think I am so easily broken?" Elena replied, a fierce spark in her expressive eyes. "I stood up to Celeste. I sat in a bunker while bullets hit the walls. I am not fragile, Lucian."
"Are you certain you want to stand beside a man who solves his problems with a gun?" Lucian asked, stepping closer, his hands gently resting on her waist.
"Are you certain you want a woman who will constantly question you?" Elena countered, a small, genuine smile playing on her lips.
Lucian’s jaw relaxed, a low, rumbling chuckle escaping his chest. It was a rare, beautiful sound. "Would I have it any other way?"
He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, consuming kiss. The quiet mutual affection they had harbored for so long ignited into a burning, undeniable passion. He held her tightly against his broad shoulders, a king finally finding his queen.
When they parted, Lucian looked toward the horizon, where the city skyline loomed. The war with the Rowe syndicate was over, but in his world, peace was always temporary.
"Are you ready to meet the commission tomorrow, Elena?" Lucian asked, his eyes hardening back into the cold, calculated stare of a boss.
"I am ready," Elena whispered, looking out at the city with him. "What happens if they don't accept me?"
"Do you truly believe anyone in this city can tell me no?" Lucian asked, the open-ended promise of a new conflict hanging in the beautiful, luminous air as they turned back toward the mansion.
The descent into the sub-basement holding cells of the Whitlock estate felt like walking into a tomb. The air grew damp and cold, smelling heavily of earth and iron. The bright, luminous lights of the upper floors were replaced by harsh, flickering fluorescent bulbs.
Lucian walked with measured, deliberate steps, his tailored dark suit a stark contrast to the grim surroundings. Elena walked beside him, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm. She had insisted on coming, needing to see the resolution of the nightmare she had helped expose.
Marcus stood outside a heavy steel door at the end of the corridor, his arms crossed.
"Is she ready?" Lucian asked quietly.
"She's been screaming for her father for two days, Boss," Marcus grunted, pulling a heavy ring of keys from his belt. "She knows he failed."
Marcus unlocked the heavy deadbolts with a loud, metallic clank and pulled the door open.

Celeste Rowe was huddled on a crude metal cot in the corner of the small, concrete cell. The elegant emerald velvet evening gown she had worn at the dinner was ruined, stained with dirt and sweat. She looked up, her face pale and haggard, the arrogance completely stripped away by the reality of her impending death.
"Lucian," Celeste gasped, scrambling off the cot and falling to her knees on the cold floor. "Please. I was going to be your wife. You can't do this."
