Chapter 2

Elena navigated the narrow spaces between the velvet dining chairs, her flat shoes dragging slightly against the cream marble floor. Her heart hammered a frantic, terrifying rhythm against her ribs, but her body felt entirely disconnected, floating in a haze of sheer, agonizing sleep deprivation. For three consecutive nights, while Lucian was away, Celeste had kept her working. Every time Elena had closed her eyes, the fiancée had found a new, impossible task, threatening the maid with severe punishment if she dared to complain.
"Elena, straighten your apron," hissed the head butler as she passed the serving station, his voice tight with anxiety. "Miss Rowe will have you thrown out into the snow."
"I... I can't," Elena whispered, her voice cracking, a fresh tear escaping her puffy eyes. "My hands won't stop shaking. I just need to sit down."
"You have to survive tonight, child," the older man pleaded, giving her a gentle push toward the head table. "Just serve the water and get back to the kitchens. Do not look at her."
Elena took a shuddering breath, forcing her trembling legs to move forward. She reached the head of the table, stepping into the immediate, bright cinematic circle of the chandeliers. With trembling, careful fingers, she lowered a crystal water pitcher, placing a freshly filled water glass directly beside Lucian. The ice clinked softly against the crystal.
As she pulled her hand back, Noah slid off his velvet dining chair. The six-year-old boy ignored the strict rules of the formal dinner and stepped directly in front of the exhausted housemaid.
Noah offered Elena the ribbon-wrapped pillow, holding it up with both of his small hands. He looked directly at her, his young face filled with a quiet, profound affection that broke through the cold atmosphere of the mafia banquet.
"Merry Christmas, Mommy," Noah said softly, his voice carrying perfectly in the immediate vicinity. "Please sleep."
Before Elena could even register the sweet, heartbreaking gesture, or reach out with her trembling hands to accept the gift, a flash of emerald velvet invaded her vision.
Celeste moved with vicious, predatory speed. She snatched the pillow directly from Noah's hands before Elena could touch it. Celeste straightened her posture, looking directly at Elena, maintaining a small, polished, yet utterly cruel smile.
"No sleeping until the house is perfect," Celeste stated, her voice smooth but laced with a venomous authority meant to grind the maid into the marble floor.
Elena looked directly at Celeste. The sheer cruelty of the statement stripped away the last of her professional restraint. Her voice emerged thin, quiet, and completely broken. She struggled visibly to steady a violent, trembling breath that racked her small frame.
"Three nights," Elena pleaded, tears spilling over her dark, puffy eyelids. "Please, just an hour."
The sound of her desperation hung in the bright, luminous air.
Suddenly, a large, heavily tattooed hand reached into the frame. Lucian gently but firmly took the ribbon-wrapped pillow directly from Celeste’s grasp.
Lucian did not look at his fiancée. He turned his head and met Elena’s tearful, exhausted eyes. The absolute, terrifying tension radiating from the boss infected the room instantly. Like a ripple across a dark pond, the silence spread. Every single dinner guest at the long banquet table stopped eating. They stopped speaking. Dozens of powerful men and women turned their heads in unison, their attention snapping entirely toward Lucian.
"Elena," Lucian said. His deep voice dropped an octave, vibrating with a lethal, suppressed fury that commanded the room. "No sleep at all?"
Celeste did not back down immediately. She held Lucian’s cold, unwavering gaze. Her polished smile tightened significantly, the corners of her mouth straining, but her voice remained calmly dismissive, projecting the image of a reasonable aristocrat managing unruly help.
"Sleep is earned in this house," Celeste countered.
May you like
Lucian did not argue. He did not yell. Moving with incredibly gentle, deliberate care, he rested the small pillow against the back of the empty velvet chair situated directly beside his own place setting. He looked at Elena, silently offering her the seat.
Elena carefully sat down, her legs finally giving out. Noah immediately rushed to her side and took her trembling hand in his. Lucian remained standing, forming an impenetrable wall of dark wool and muscle between Celeste and Elena, holding Celeste’s gaze as the room fell into absolute, suffocating silence.
