Chapter 6

The grand foyer of the Whitlock estate was a cavernous space of polished marble and soaring archways, entirely devoid of the warmth present in the master suite above. The tiered crystal chandeliers were unlit, the only illumination coming from the harsh security floodlights outside bleeding through the tall windows.

Lucian descended the sweeping marble staircase with measured, deliberate steps. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing the intricate, artistic tattoos wrapping around his muscular forearms, discarding his suit jacket on the banister.

Standing in the center of the foyer, surrounded by six of Lucian’s heavily armed enforcers, was Arthur Rowe. Celeste’s father was a ruthless, aging capo, his face flushed with arrogant rage, his heavy wool overcoat looking out of place amidst the tactical gear of the guards.

"Where is my daughter, Whitlock?" Arthur demanded, his voice echoing loudly in the cold space of the foyer. "You cannot hold a Rowe hostage in your own home!"

Lucian stopped on the final step, towering over the older capo. His cold, observant eyes analyzed Arthur with clinical detachment, showing absolutely zero fear in the face of the angry patriarch.

"Do you believe you give orders in my home, Arthur?" Lucian asked, his deep voice a low, terrifying rumble that seemed to shake the marble floors.

"Release Celeste right now, or the alliance is dead, and we go to war," Arthur spat, taking a step forward before Marcus’s massive hand slammed into his chest, stopping him dead in his tracks.

"Are you willing to die for a woman who tortures my staff and threatens my son?" Lucian asked, his jaw settling into a sharp, uncompromising line.

Arthur sneered, trying to maintain his bravado in front of his own men standing outside. "She was just securing her future and disciplining the help! You are soft, Lucian! You are letting a crying child and a maid dictate the politics of the entire eastern seaboard!"

"Do you consider the premeditated psychological abuse of my household to be mere politics?" Lucian inquired, stepping off the stairs and closing the distance between them until he was mere inches from Arthur’s face.

"It's business!" Arthur shouted, spit flying from his lips in a desperate attempt to reclaim control of the room. "And right now, business dictates that you hand her over before I burn this place down!"

"Shall we see how much your business is worth when it is buried in ashes?" Lucian asked softly.

He didn't wait for Arthur to draw a weapon. Lucian moved with blinding speed, his tattooed hand closing like a steel vice around Arthur's throat, lifting the older capo several inches off the floor.

"Did you think I would let you leave this house alive after what your blood tried to do to mine?" Lucian asked, his eyes burning with absolute, murderous intent.

The sound of weapons cocking echoed through the foyer, signaling the beginning of a bloody, uncompromising war. Lucian threw the older man backward, drawing his own suppressed weapon in a single, fluid motion as the grand foyer erupted into deafening violence. The marble shattered around them as the Rowe enforcers opened fire, returning the deadly barrage from the Whitlock syndicate.

Upstairs, the sounds of the battle were muffled but unmistakably terrifying. Elena jolted awake in the master suite, her heart pounding frantically as the echoes of gunfire reached her ears. She sat up, disoriented for a moment, realizing she was in Lucian's private bed.

The heavy mahogany doors of the suite burst open, and Silas rushed in, carrying a suppressed submachine gun.

"Miss Brooks, you need to come with me immediately," Silas ordered, his face grim. "The perimeter has been breached."

"Where is Lucian?" Elena gasped, scrambling out of the bed, her rumpled uniform feeling entirely inadequate. "Where is Noah?"

"The boss is holding the foyer," Silas replied, grabbing her arm gently but firmly. "Noah is already secured in the panic room below the east wing. I am tasked with getting you there."

"I can't leave him up there fighting alone!" Elena cried, pulling back slightly.

"He ordered me to keep you safe," Silas stated firmly. "And if you die, he will kill me himself. Move!"

He didn't give her a choice. Silas pulled her out of the room, dragging her down the back service corridors as the sound of the war raging downstairs grew louder and more terrifying with every step.
