Chapter 4

For a fraction of a second, the universe seemed to hold its breath. The dust motes dancing in the bright shafts of sunlight hung suspended. Donatella stared up at her son, her lips parting slightly to deliver a final, cutting reprimand that would put him back in his place.

She never got the chance.

Vittorio’s arm moved with explosive, blinding speed. The motion was so fast that the human eye could barely track it. He did not ball his hand into a fist; he used the flat of his broad, calloused palm. He drove his hand across the space between them, delivering one brutal, open-handed slap directly across Donatella’s face.

The sound was a horrific, concussive crack that echoed off the white wainscoting like a gunshot.

The sheer kinetic force of the blow lifted the matriarch off her feet. Her head snapped violently sideways, her heavy pearl necklace breaking with a sharp snap. White pearls exploded into the air, catching the bright sunlight before raining down onto the hardwood floor like hail.

Donatella stumbled backward, her elegant heels betraying her. She crashed wildly into the towering stack of Rocco’s moving boxes. The cardboard gave way with a loud, tearing crunch. Several heavy boxes toppled over, collapsing around her as she went down hard. She landed in an undignified heap on the thick hallway carpet, her designer suit twisted, her fair, rosy cheek already blooming into a dark, violent shade of plum.

The silence that followed was deafening.

Greta, the maid, clamped a hand over her mouth to stifle a scream, shrinking back against the wallpaper. Elodie stopped crying, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the woman who had just pushed her, now crumpled among the cardboard ruins.

The two bodyguards standing inside the bedroom froze completely. They were hardened men, veterans of syndicate warfare, but they had just witnessed the absolute unthinkable. The boss of the family had just struck the untouchable matriarch. They didn't reach for their weapons; they didn't speak. They simply stared at Vittorio’s broad back, waiting for a command, realizing instantly that the hierarchy of the Mancini family had just been violently and permanently rewritten.

Vittorio did not rub his hand. He did not adjust his cuffs. He stood perfectly still, his breathing steady and controlled, looking down at the woman who had brought him into the world. There was no rage left on his face, only a cold, mechanical emptiness that was infinitely more terrifying.

Rocco was paralyzed. His tailored suit suddenly felt too tight. He looked from his mother on the floor to his brother standing over her, his mind struggling to process the sheer brutality of the act. The smirk was entirely gone, replaced by the sickening realization that the protective umbrella of his mother’s authority had just been obliterated in a single, devastating heartbeat.
