Chapter 3

The sudden, heavy silence in the corridor was absolute. Even the bodyguards carrying Rocco’s custom suits into the bedroom froze in their tracks, sensing the catastrophic shift in the mansion's atmosphere.

Donatella Mancini did not flinch. She had raised Vittorio; she had molded him into the ruthless syndicate boss he was today. She believed, with the unshakable hubris of a matriarch, that she was the true power behind the throne. She looked at her eldest son standing at the top of the stairs, her fair skin glowing in the bright light, and refused to yield an inch of ground.

With a slow, deliberate motion, Donatella raised her hand and pointed her manicured finger down the long, bright hallway, gesturing toward the cramped, windowless storage rooms at the back of the estate. Her message was clear: she had made a ruling, and she expected the boss of the family to uphold it. Elodie was just a girl, a temporary distraction. Rocco was a man, a bloodline heir.

Beside her, Rocco leaned against the doorframe, crossing his arms over his tailored chest. A smug, arrogant smirk played across his lips. He looked at Vittorio with a challenging gleam in his eye, confident that their mother’s ultimate authority would shield him from any consequence. He was the golden child, the one Donatella had always favored, and he fully expected Vittorio to step aside and let him claim the premium suite.

Vittorio’s eyes locked onto his mother’s pointed finger.

He slowly opened his right hand. The heavy leather travel bag slipped from his grip, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull, concussive thud that made Greta jump.

He didn't look at Elodie. He didn't look at Greta. His entire, terrifying focus was locked onto the two figures in the doorway.

Vittorio began to walk.

His polished leather shoes struck the floorboards with a slow, measured, rhythmic cadence. He didn't rush. He didn't storm down the hall. He moved with the terrifying inevitability of a glacier. His dark suit absorbed the bright sunlight, a walking shadow in a house of blinding color.

Donatella’s pointed finger slowly lowered as he approached, but she kept her chin high, her rosy face set in stubborn defiance. She had survived mob wars, federal indictments, and the assassination of her husband. She was not going to be intimidated by her own flesh and blood.

Rocco’s smirk began to falter slightly as Vittorio closed the distance. The sheer physical mass of his older brother, radiating a deep, suffocating masculine power, was suddenly very real and very close. Rocco instinctively uncrossed his arms, his American accent catching in his throat as he prepared to offer a flippant excuse.

But Vittorio wasn't there to talk. He stepped past the crying child, past the trembling maid, and stopped exactly twelve inches away from his mother. The height difference was staggering; he towered over her, casting a dark shadow over her elegant designer outfit. The air between them crackled with decades of unspoken resentment, blood ties, and syndicate politics, all culminating in this single, sunlit moment.
