Chapter 13

We dismantled Malcolm’s coalition quietly.
No war.
War would have made him important.
Instead, I called the families one at a time.
Showed them Daniel’s recordings.
Showed them the payment structure.
Then asked one question.
“Did you agree that your widows and children could be denied protection if they could not pay enough?”
Nobody wanted to answer yes aloud.
That was Malcolm’s weakness.
His system sounded efficient in private.
Cruel when described plainly.
Two families withdrew immediately.
One claimed ignorance.
Probably partly true.
Another defended the model.
They lost Voss cooperation.
The fifth tried bargaining.
No.
Malcolm’s power depended on collective confidence.
Once the group fractured, his philosophy became personal greed wearing mathematics.
Edmund saw it happen.
He grew furious.
“You’re destroying years of work.”
I looked at him.
“You pinned my son to a table.”
“He cried over nothing.”
There.
Exactly the man I thought he was.
Then he added:
“Piper would have chosen eventually.”
I stepped closer.
“She is five.”
“Children understand survival.”
“No.”
My voice stayed quiet.
“Children understand which adults make them feel safe.”
His face hardened.
That distinction ruined men like him.
Derek began distancing himself from his father.
Not morally at first.
Practically.
He realized the Langs had been used as blunt instruments while Malcolm remained clean.
Edmund called him coward.
Derek answered:
“You taught me to survive.”
Interesting.
Cruel philosophies eventually eat their own families.
I removed the Langs from the casino permanently.
Personal money remained theirs.
No Voss access.
No private rooms.
No ability to use the house as leverage.
Samuel became interim manager.
He hated the title.
Good sign.
Then I did something Daniel would have argued with me about.
I closed the children-and-family debt tables completely.
No more relatives used as collateral for gambling obligations.
No spouse.
No child.
No dependent.
Debt stayed with the person who created it.
Several old clients complained.
I did not care.
Edmund had asked which child pays.
May you like
The answer became structural.
None.
