Chapter 11

The fourth recording named no mastermind.

Daniel was smarter than that.

He described incentives.

Edmund gained casino control.

Julian gained leverage inside Voss.

The coalition gained access to Voss clients.

But one person gained something larger.

Freedom from Daniel’s three informants.

Thomas Hale.

Rebecca Voss.

Samuel Crane.

Three people blocking the protection market from inside.

If Daniel died and those names remained hidden, the coalition would keep hunting.

Eventually one of them would make a mistake.

Daniel built the ring vault to protect them until Marina reached the truth.

Then he said:

“The person pushing hardest to identify all three is not Edmund.”

Edmund looked relieved.

Too soon.

“Edmund is greedy, cruel, and easy to predict.”

Derek almost smiled before remembering where he was.

Daniel continued.

“The one I fear is Malcolm Rourke.”

I frowned.

Malcolm Rourke.

Former Voss ally.

Sixty-one.

He attended Daniel’s funeral.

He hugged my children.

He had not appeared in anything so far.

Perfect.

Daniel explained.

Malcolm designed the coalition.

Not for money alone.

For structure.

He believed Mafia families wasted resources protecting people who could not repay loyalty economically.

Widows.

Old soldiers.

Small businesses.

Children of dead men.

His system would turn protection into subscription.

Daniel refused because he believed family responsibility included people who could not pay.

Malcolm called him sentimental.

Sound familiar.

The recording ended.

Samuel looked at me.

“Malcolm is at your house twice a month.”

I knew.

Advisory dinners.

He brought Piper books.

Owen called him Uncle Mal.

My stomach turned.

Then Derek laughed bitterly.

“You finally understand why Dad asked which child pays the debt.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

Edmund snapped:

“Shut up.”

Derek ignored him.

“That phrase came from Malcolm.”

Silence.

He taught the Langs the language.

Pick what matters most.

Make protection expensive.

Force people to choose.

One child pays.

One widow loses support.

One business gets abandoned.

Scarcity as discipline.

I looked at Edmund.

“You used that philosophy on a four-year-old.”

He shrugged.

“Your husband died believing everyone could be saved.”

There.

Mock the dead.

Again.

I lowered my voice.

“No.”

May you like

Then held Daniel’s ring.

“He died making sure you couldn’t decide who was disposable.”
