Chapter 9

Within minutes, the massive, opulent dining room was entirely empty of guests. The bright, luminous video colors of the room remained, casting a soft elegant warmth across the deserted tables. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to bathe the carved walnut paneling and the gilded mirrors in a continuous, golden glow. The only people remaining in the vast hall were Victor, his mother Margot, the housemaid Nell, and a dozen heavily armed security guards standing silently in the periphery shadows.
The engagement was shattered, the alliance broken, but the underlying truth of the evening felt like a profound, clarifying relief.
Victor looked down at the table. He reached out with his tattooed hand and picked up the discarded diamond engagement ring from the cream roses. He dropped the heavy piece of jewelry casually into his suit pocket, dismissing it entirely.
He turned his full attention back to the two women beside him. The cold, terrifying edge of the Mafia boss softened considerably, though his posture remained strong and commanding.
Margot was wiping her eyes with a fine linen napkin, her breathing finally beginning to steady. The terror that had kept her silent for weeks was evaporating under the absolute protection of her son.
“Are you unharmed, Mother?” Victor asked gently, his deep, low voice returning to a warm, comforting rumble.
"I am fine, Victor. Truly, I am fine now," Margot whispered, her fragile hands reaching out to rest on his dark sleeve. "I am so sorry I didn't tell you. I didn't want to ruin your happiness."
“Did you believe my happiness could exist while you were locked in the dark?” Victor asked softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to the elderly woman's silver hair.
Margot smiled through her tears, shaking her head.
Victor then turned his perceptive gaze toward the beautiful housemaid who had risked everything to speak the truth. Nell stood quietly in her sophisticated black maid dress, her hands neatly folded over her white apron. Her softly rounded face was pale from the adrenaline, but her expressive brows were relaxed. She had just survived a confrontation that should have cost her her life.
“Are you unharmed, Nell?” Victor asked, stepping slightly closer to her. The cinematic light caught the loose strands of hair falling over his forehead, making him look like a dark, avenging knight in the luminous room.
"I am perfectly fine, Mr. Whitford," Nell replied, her American accent steady and respectful. "I am just relieved Mrs. Aldridge is safe."
“Do you understand the magnitude of the debt I owe you tonight?” Victor asked, looking deeply into her expressive eyes.

Nell’s fair, rosy cheeks flushed a delicate pink under his intense, perceptive gaze. "I only did what was right, sir. I couldn't let her suffer anymore."
“Is bravery not the rarest commodity in our world?” Victor questioned, bowing his head slightly in a profound gesture of respect. He looked at the young woman, realizing that her quiet, graceful courage was worth more than any political alliance the syndicate could offer.
