Chapter 2

Moving with seamless, quiet grace behind the seated matriarch was Nell Foster. At twenty-seven, the housemaid possessed a beauty that effortlessly rivaled any movie star in the grand room. She had a softly heart-shaped face, delicate cheekbones, expressive brows, and thick hair arranged impeccably into a loose, low twist. Her slender figure and graceful posture were highlighted by a sophisticated black maid dress. The uniform featured a cinched waist, a slim fitted silhouette, a short A-line skirt, and a neatly tied white apron, complete with a crisp white collar and cuffs. Elegant and polished, Nell was the picture of professional servitude, yet beneath her serene exterior, a quiet terror was taking root.
Nell stepped into the medium wide shot, carefully holding a silver water pitcher. The golden light of the chandeliers warmed her rosy skin as she leaned slightly forward. The continuous action of the evening flowed effortlessly as Nell finished pouring Margot’s water, ensuring not a single drop spilled onto the pristine white damask linen. She placed the heavy silver pitcher gently back onto the table, preparing to step away and fade back into the periphery of the brilliant, luminous room.
As she began to straighten her posture, a sudden, desperate movement arrested her.
Margot quietly reached out. The elderly woman’s frail, shaking fingers firmly caught Nell’s hand, gripping the young maid’s warm skin with a frantic, silent urgency.
Nell stopped immediately. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her expressive brows remained carefully neutral. She looked down at the matriarch. Margot attempted a small, apologetic smile, a heartbreaking effort to mask her panic in the bright, clear lighting. The older woman's fair, rosy cheeks lacked their usual color, and the grip on Nell’s hand felt like the desperate clutching of a drowning victim.
From across the table, Delphine’s sharp eyes caught the interaction. The fiancée shifted in her cream velvet chair, the champagne satin of her gown rustling softly. She leaned forward, moving closer to the center of the table, her presence suddenly looming over the quiet exchange.
Sensing the approach of her future daughter-in-law, Margot’s fingers tightened painfully around Nell’s hand. The sheer, unadulterated fear radiating from the seventy-three-year-old woman was undeniable.
Victor, seated just inches away, noticed the subtle, drastic change in the atmosphere. His cold, perceptive eyes snapped toward his mother’s hand, observing the white-knuckled grip she held on the beautiful maid.
The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Delphine.
Looking directly into Victor’s eyes, cutting off whatever observation he was about to make, Delphine spoke. Her American accent was perfectly modulated, carrying a smooth, reassuring voice that was designed to placate any arising suspicion.
“Your mother’s ready for bed.”

Delphine’s smile remained gentle, painted flawlessly onto her face, but her eyes betrayed her true focus. She did not look at Margot with concern; instead, her gaze carefully and calculatingly studied Victor’s reaction. She was managing the optics of the situation, ensuring the bright, elegant warmth of the dinner remained untainted by the matriarch’s sudden, inconvenient panic. After delivering her reassuring line, Delphine glanced pointedly toward Nell, then flicked her eyes toward the doorway, silently ordering the maid to remove the elderly woman from the room.
But Victor Aldridge did not follow Delphine’s script.
