Chapter 10

The tension that had paralyzed the luminous dining hall had completely dissipated, replaced by a quiet, intimate calm. The bright, airy lighting continued to cast a gentle golden warmth across the deserted white damask tables, the tall ivory candles flickering silently in their glass hurricane holders. The portrait of Malcolm’s late father stood proudly above the marble fireplace, an approving sentinel over the actions of his son.
Victor stood near the head of the table, his broad shoulders relaxed. He looked down at his mother, who was visibly exhausted by the emotional toll of the evening.
“Will you allow Nell to take you to the main guest suite, Mother?” Victor asked softly. “Will you sleep in a room with the doors wide open tonight?”
"I would like that very much, Victor," Margot smiled, her frail hands reaching out to take Nell’s arm. "Thank you, my son."
Victor stepped back, allowing the two women space.
“Will you accompany her, Nell?” Victor asked, turning his dark, perceptive eyes back to the beautiful housemaid.
"Of course, Mr. Whitford. I will stay with her until she is completely settled," Nell replied with a graceful nod. Her sophisticated black maid dress moved elegantly as she stepped forward to support the elderly matriarch.
"Thank you, Nell," Margot whispered as they began to walk slowly away from the table. "You are a very brave, very kind girl."
"It is my pleasure, Mrs. Aldridge," Nell smiled softly.
Victor watched them walk toward the heavy double doors leading to the residential wing. His angular face, usually a mask of impenetrable authority, softened with a rare, genuine gratitude. The movie-star handsome Mafia boss had built his life on power and intimidation, but tonight, a young woman in a maid's uniform had demonstrated a courage that surpassed his fiercest soldiers.
As the doors clicked shut behind them, the heavy, quiet reality of the criminal underworld rushed back into the room.
A senior capo stepped out from the shadows of the marble columns, approaching the head of the table. The man looked grim, holding a secure encrypted phone.
"The perimeter is locked down, Boss," the capo reported in a crisp American accent. "Delphine’s family has left the property. But we are already receiving chatter from the southern territories. Her father is mobilizing his lieutenants. They view the broken engagement as an act of war."
Victor did not flinch. He slowly buttoned his tailored dark suit jacket, his powerful chest expanding as he took a deep, controlled breath. The bright, luminous colors of the room felt suddenly charged with a lethal, violent energy.
“Did we expect them to accept their dismissal quietly?” Victor asked, his voice dropping back into the cold, calculated register of a wartime general.
He turned around, his polished leather shoes making slow, deliberate sounds against the hardwood floor. He walked toward the marble fireplace, looking up at the portrait of his father. He had protected his mother, and he had found a new, fiercely loyal ally in his household. Now, he was prepared to unleash absolute hell to ensure his family's safety remained untouched.
“Are the strike teams fully armed and ready to move?” Victor inquired, turning his cold, perceptive eyes back to his capo.
"They are waiting for your command, sir," the capo confirmed with a sharp nod.
May you like
“Do we not have a war to prepare for?” Victor asked.
The Mafia boss stepped out of the bright, airy sanctuary of the dining hall and into the dark, violent night, ready to burn the city to the ground to defend his empire.
