Chapter 4

The aftermath of the violent impact hung in the bright, cinematic air of the VIP lounge. The absolute silence was deafening. Cyril lay stunned amidst the ruined glass console, groaning as he struggled to process how a petite maid had just overpowered him so completely. The two professional bodyguards quickly recovered from their initial shock and rushed to Cyril’s side, their hands hovering near their holstered weapons, torn between assisting their employer and surviving the wrath of the mafia boss.

Nerina did not look at the gasping man on the floor, nor did she acknowledge the towering, armed men checking on him. She immediately turned her back on the chaos and focused entirely on Amadeo.

Her hands were trembling so violently she could barely control them. She stepped intimately close to him, completely invading the personal space of the terrifying mafia boss in front of his entire syndicate. Her expressive eyes checked his face with profound, worried intensity.

She looked down at his injured right hand. The skin around his heavy family signet ring was swelling rapidly, the metal biting painfully into his bruised flesh. She knew that if the swelling continued, the ring would have to be cut off, or worse, it would cause permanent nerve damage to his hand.

With agonizing care, Nerina reached out. Her delicate fingers trembled against his warm, tattooed skin as she gently took his right hand.

"Sir, please," Nerina whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring silence of the room. "Let me help."

Amadeo did not pull away. He allowed her to manipulate his hand, the warmth of her presence grounding him in the chaotic, violent scene. He watched her neatly pinned hair and the white lace headband, his chest tightening with a profound, unspoken affection. She had just risked her life to protect him.

With incredible, reverent tenderness, Nerina carefully eased the heavy gold signet ring over his swollen knuckle. She worked slowly, her eyes darting up to his face repeatedly, searching for any sign of discomfort or pain. Once the ring slipped free, a visible wave of relief washed over her features. She gently settled the heavy ring into the center of his open, uninjured left palm.

Amadeo stood perfectly still, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles ticked beneath his neat stubble. He looked down at the beautiful woman standing before him. He did not yell. His deep, measured presence demanded absolute authority from everyone in the room. He looked at the housemaid, his dark eyes burning with an intense, quiet devotion that he no longer tried to hide.

The fifty guests remained entirely frozen, paralyzed by the internal political hierarchy. To intervene was to choose a side in a war that had just violently erupted. Amadeo Langridge remained perfectly still, processing the loyalty that had just been displayed.

He slowly brought his uninjured hand up, the heavy signet ring resting in his palm. He looked at Nerina, communicating a silent promise of absolute protection before he turned his wrath onto his cousin.
