Chapter 1

The VIP lounge of the private terminal was a masterpiece of modern luxury, bathed in bright, airy, and luminous colors. Soft, elegant warmth radiated from hidden fixtures, ensuring clean whites and natural skin tones without a hint of a heavy yellow cast. It was a space designed for comfort and discretion, yet today, it hummed with the electric tension of forty relatives, capos, guests, and estate staff gathered for a departure reception. The American accents of the mafia elite mingled with the clinking of crystal glasses, creating a deceptive veneer of civility over a syndicate simmering with internal strife.

At the center of the lounge stood Amadeo Westbourne. Thirty-two years old, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss. His dark hair was slicked back flawlessly over a sharp jawline dusted with neat stubble. Artistic tattoos crawled up his neck and decorated his hands, starkly contrasting with the crisp cuffs of his tailored dark suit. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch completed the image of terrifying authority. He stood beside a sleek glass console, looking down at his open briefcase.

Inside the leather case rested his passport, travel documents, and a single sheet of paper that had caught his immediate, undivided attention: a last-minute crew-change notice.

Before Amadeo could fully process the document, his older cousin, Cyril Westbourne, moved with sudden, brutal violence. Forty-three years old and a senior capo in the family, Cyril wore an expensive formal suit that stretched slightly over his frame. He was flanked by two massive bodyguards—one Black American, one white American—both wearing dark suits and earpieces, projecting a wall of menacing intimidation.

As Amadeo reached his right hand toward his passport, Cyril slammed the heavy lid of the briefcase down with vicious, calculated force.

The metal lock struck directly across Amadeo’s fingers. Amadeo jerked his hand free instantly, a sharp, ragged exhale escaping his lips. He did not cry out, but the sudden, violent movement drew the immediate attention of the nearby guests. Conversations died out as dozens of faces turned toward the confrontation.

Cyril stood over the briefcase, a cruel, triumphant smirk playing on his lips. He leaned in, his voice dripping with mocking condescension.

"Tomorrow, they’ll be calling me Boss," Cyril announced, loud enough for the closest capos to hear.

The humiliation was public, deliberate, and designed to break Amadeo’s authority before he even stepped onto the tarmac. Amadeo cradled his injured right hand against his chest, the muscles in his jaw ticking violently beneath his stubble.

From the periphery of the lounge, a figure moved with quiet, desperate urgency. Nerina Fenshaw, a twenty-five-year-old housemaid, possessed a delicate, breathtaking beauty that was usually hidden in the shadows of the estate. Her highly expressive features were contorted with genuine terror, and her dark hair was neatly pinned beneath a white lace maid headband. She wore a fitted black maid dress, a pristine white apron, white collar and cuffs, and practical flats that made almost no sound on the polished floors.

She saw the malicious glint in Cyril’s eyes and the dangerous, coiled tension in Amadeo’s broad shoulders. Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs. In the dangerous world of the Westbourne syndicate, a housemaid stepping into a dispute between family members was a fatal error. Yet, seeing the man she secretly, deeply cared for being injured and humiliated in front of his peers overrode every instinct of self-preservation she possessed. She stepped directly into the volatile space between them.
