Chapter 9

Mabel’s mother, Evelyn, had once warned me about this.
I remembered only later.
We had been married twelve years.
She died after a sudden illness.
Before Mabel was born, we once discussed children and power.
Evelyn said:
“If we have a daughter, promise me nobody spends her childhood teaching her she has to prove she can survive men.”
At the time I laughed.
Not because I disagreed.
Because the sentence sounded dramatic.
Now I understood.
Corinne’s plan came from the opposite fear.
Surround Mabel with a boy early.
Teach her power arrives paired with male protection.
Prepare everyone to look past her before she even understands being looked at.

No.
I would not do that.
