Chapter 8

The capos met with me three days later.
I asked one question.
“How many of you believed Oliver was being prepared?”
Five hands.
Out of eight.
Excellent.
“How many believed I wanted that?”
All five.
There.
No conspiracy.
Worse.
Assumption.
One capo, Renzo Hale, said:
“Corinne told us you wanted continuity.”
I laughed.
“Continuity of what?”
He had no answer.
That was the point.
Words like continuity become blank checks when people are afraid of uncertainty.
I told them:
“No child is being prepared to inherit anything.”
Someone asked:
“Not even Mabel?”
“Especially not Mabel.”
Silence.
May you like
“She is six.”
Good.
