Chapter 5

The sheer audacity of Sabine’s declaration hung heavily in the bright, airy room. She had not denied the kidnapping; she had merely attempted to justify it as a brutal, necessary political maneuver. She believed her status made her untouchable, even in the face of such a monstrous crime.
Tristan stared at her, the silence stretching until it became physically painful for the fifty guests trapped in the room. He did not yell. He did not explode into violence. The quiet, deep, controlled manner in which he operated was far more terrifying than any shouted threat.
"Do you honestly believe," Tristan began, speaking so slowly that every syllable landed like a physical blow, "that I require the permission of the commission, or the alliance of your father, to raise my own son?"
"You are throwing away an empire for a servant!" Sabine cried, her burgundy velvet gown rustling violently as she backed away from his murderous glare. "You will lose everything!"
"I would burn this empire to ash before I let a monster like you raise my blood," Tristan replied coldly.
He turned his back on his fiancée entirely, dismissing her existence with a finality that made the surrounding capos shudder. He looked down at the beautiful, exhausted woman standing beside him. Clara was weeping openly, her expressive eyes locked on the cream bassinet, her body vibrating with the desperate, primal need to hold her child.
Tristan reached out. The artistic negative-space tattoos on his hands contrasted beautifully with her pale, trembling skin as he gently cupping her shoulder. He met Clara’s tear-filled eyes, his own softening with a profound, quiet tenderness that he had never shown to another living soul.
"Clara," Tristan said, his voice dropping into a low, unmistakable authority that reverberated through her very bones. He stepped aside, clearing the path to the bassinet. "Take your son."
Clara let out a ragged, heartbroken sob of pure joy. She didn't hesitate. She threw herself toward the cream bassinet, her black maid dress and white apron brushing against the expensive carved walnut table. She reached down into the soft blankets.
With trembling, reverent hands, Clara carefully lifted two-week-old Eli into a secure cradle hold against her chest. The infant settled immediately into his mother's arms, the distinctive crescent-shaped birthmark on his left wrist clearly visible under the warm fairy lights of the Christmas tree. Clara buried her face against the baby's soft, fair skin, weeping uncontrollably as she rocked him.
"My baby," Clara whispered repeatedly. "My sweet, beautiful boy. I have you. Mommy has you."

Tristan watched them for a brief moment, quiet tenderness passing through his eyes as he witnessed the mother of his child reunited with their son. It was a picture of pure, vulnerable love amidst a den of vipers.
Then, the warmth vanished from Tristan's face entirely. He slowly turned toward Sabine. His jaw tightened slightly; the muscles ticking beneath his short stubble. He held a cold, unwavering stare, locking the terrified woman in a silent promise of absolute retribution.
