Chapter 3

The words dropped into the opulent dining hall like a live grenade. The polite applause of the fifty gathered guests died instantly. The clinking of crystal glasses and gold-rimmed porcelain ceased, replaced by a suffocating, absolute silence. Every single person in the room froze, their eyes darting from the trembling, disheveled housemaid to the polished, aristocratic fiancée.
Tristan Blackwell sat perfectly still. The deep, controlled rhythm of his breathing halted. He slowly turned his head, his dark, intense gaze moving from the cream bassinet to the exhausted, vulnerable woman standing beside him.
He looked directly at Clara. He saw the profound, devastating agony in her puffy, shadowed eyes, the way her creased uniform and askew white ruffled headband seemed to physically manifest the grief she had been carrying. And then, he looked at the sheer, unadulterated truth blazing in her expression as she stared at the infant.
The pieces of a horrifying puzzle began to snap together in Tristan's mind. The sudden, convenient adoption. Sabine’s insistence on a specific, private clinic for Clara. The rushed, closed-casket funeral he had been barred from attending due to 'syndicate security protocols.' Recognition tightened Tristan’s angular face, turning his handsome features into a mask of cold, terrifying realization.
"What is the meaning of this outburst?" Marcus, the senior capo, demanded nervously from the middle of the table. "Guards, remove this hysterical woman at once!"
"No one moves a muscle," Tristan commanded.
His deep, controlled voice was not loud, but it carried a lethal, apocalyptic authority that instantly paralyzed the two bodyguards who had stepped forward. Every dinner guest stopped breathing and turned toward Tristan, realizing they were witnessing a catastrophic shift in the syndicate's power dynamic.
Tristan stood up slowly from his velvet dining chair. His broad shoulders cast a massive, imposing shadow over the banquet table. He ignored the terrified whispers of the crowd and focused entirely on the trembling maid who had captured his heart months ago.
"Clara," Tristan said, his voice dropping into a slow, measured cadence that sent shivers down the spines of everyone in the room. He stepped closer to the bassinet, his dark eyes fixed on her. "Could this be our son?"
The guests erupted into a cacophony of shocked gasps. The mafia boss had just publicly admitted to fathering a child with a servant, completely humiliating his high-society fiancée in front of the entire criminal empire.
"It's him, Tristan," Clara sobbed, the crystal pitcher finally slipping from her hands and crashing onto the cream marble floor. The water pooled around her black flats, but she didn't care. "I saw the birthmark. The crescent moon on his wrist. I saw it before they took him away. She told me he was dead!"

Tristan looked down into the cream bassinet. The infant stared back up at him, bearing the unmistakable, fair, rosy skin and dark features of the Blackwell bloodline. The tiny crescent mark on the left wrist was clearly visible in the bright, luminous light.
Tristan slowly turned his head, his gaze locking onto the woman in the burgundy velvet gown. The air in the room turned freezing cold.
