Chapter 9

Outside, amidst the falling snow and the burning wreckage of the northern gate, an armored SUV violently rammed through the chaos, screeching to a halt just outside the shattered front doors.

Stepping out from behind the reinforced door was Old Man Shaw, Juliette's father. He was surrounded by a wall of shielded guards, his face twisted in desperate rage.

"Dominic!" Shaw screamed over the gunfire, holding a megaphone. "Give me my daughter, and we walk away! Keep her, and we burn this house until there is nothing left but ash!"

Dominic signaled for his men to cease fire. A tense, fragile silence descended over the ruined foyer, broken only by the groans of the wounded and the crackle of burning evergreens near the entrance.

Dominic stepped out from behind a marble column, walking slowly and deliberately into the open doorway. He stood in the falling snow, entirely exposed, yet projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying invincibility. His very short stubble was covered in soot, his observant eyes locked onto the rival boss.

"Do you believe you are in a position to negotiate, Shaw?" Dominic asked, his deep, controlled voice carrying across the snowy courtyard without the need for a megaphone.

"I have two hundred men outside your walls, Crowne!" Shaw yelled back, though his voice wavered slightly at the sheer audacity of Dominic standing in the open. "You are outnumbered!"

"Are they loyal men, Shaw, or are they mercenaries who prefer breathing to dying for a manipulator?" Dominic inquired, tilting his head slightly. He raised his left hand, the artistic tattoos stark against the white snow.

Suddenly, the tree line surrounding the estate erupted with brilliant, blinding spotlight beams.

Shaw looked around in sheer terror. Surrounding his entire force, perfectly positioned on the high ground and blocking the only exit road, were dozens of black tactical vehicles. The cavalry hadn't arrived for Shaw; they had arrived for Dominic. The allied families, notified of the unprovoked attack on a sitting boss, had mobilized to crush the aggressor.

"Did you think I would face you alone?" Dominic asked softly, the words carrying like a death knell. "Your daughter is in a cell because she manipulated my son and threatened my housekeeper. You are standing in my courtyard because you are a fool. Drop your weapons, or die in the snow."

The Shaw mercenaries didn't need to be told twice. Realizing they were completely surrounded and outgunned, the clatter of rifles hitting the pavement echoed through the cold night air.

Dominic turned his back on the defeated army, leaving Silas to handle the prisoners. He walked back into the ruined mansion, his chest heaving, the adrenaline finally beginning to ebb.

He didn't stop to assess the damage. He didn't speak to his cheering men. He walked directly toward the secure interior stairs, moving with singular, desperate purpose. He reached the heavy oak doors of his study.

"Clara," Dominic called out, knocking firmly. "It's me. Open the door."

The heavy deadbolt clicked immediately. Clara threw the door open, her beautiful, expressive face pale and streaked with tears. She took one look at his soot-covered, exhausted face and threw herself into his arms.

Dominic dropped his weapon, wrapping his arms fiercely around her petite frame, burying his face in her neck, breathing in her scent. The war was over. The king had defended his castle, and the woman who held his heart was safe in his arms, waiting for the dawn.

The morning sun cast a bright, cinematic light over the shattered glass and scarred marble of the Crowne estate. The air still smelled faintly of cordite and smoke, a lingering ghost of the violence that had claimed the night. But inside the grand drawing room, where the chaos had first been ignited, a strange, profound peace had settled. The velvet sofas were righted, the debris swept away, and the fortress stood unbowed.
