Chapter 4

The silence in the opulent drawing room was a physical weight, pressing down on the chests of the elite guests who dared not draw a breath. The warm golden light from the crystal chandeliers suddenly felt incredibly harsh and exposing, stripping away the glamorous facade of the Christmas Eve reception.

Dominic Crowne had just finished greeting a group of international buyers near the grand entrance. His situational awareness was legendary among the syndicates, and the sudden, breathless silence in the center of the room immediately caught his attention.

He moved with deliberate, terrifying slowness, his broad shoulders cutting a path through the frozen guests. He bypassed his senior capos and walked directly toward the low ribbon-covered worktable.

Dominic stopped right beside Clara. His towering, masculine frame completely dominated the space, casting a long shadow in the golden light. He didn't look at Juliette immediately. His cold, observant eyes took in the scene: the trembling housemaid, the smiling child, and the heavy diamond brooch held in the air like a weapon.

He looked first at the six-year-old boy. Owen was still beaming, entirely oblivious to the lethal tension vibrating through the room, proud of his role in the 'surprise'.

With a slow, deliberate turn of his head, Dominic shifted his gaze to the terrified young woman standing beside him. He assessed Clara’s exhausted posture, the deep creases in her uniform, and the undeniable fear radiating from her delicate frame.

Dominic slowly raised his head and met Clara’s eyes.

The quiet, unspoken mutual affection that existed between them—a fragile, dangerous secret hidden in plain sight—ignited instantly in the space between them. Clara held his gaze, finding an anchor of absolute safety in his unblinking stare. She didn't need to defend herself; the truth was already spoken.

Dominic finally turned his head toward Juliette. The movement was deliberate and terrifying.

Juliette looked directly at Dominic, her panic palpable beneath her emerald satin gown. She clutched the brooch tightly, desperate to salvage the situation.

"Children invent stories, darling," Juliette said, her voice smooth and dripping with a condescending, dismissive sweetness, attempting to project the image of a reasonable aristocrat managing an unruly situation. "He has an overactive imagination. She obviously stole it and lied to him."

The lie hung in the bright, luminous air, heavy and desperate.

Dominic did not flinch. His broad shoulders remained perfectly still beneath his tailored dark three-piece suit. He didn't yell. He didn't immediately move toward Juliette.

Instead, he held her gaze. The sheer masculine power radiating from his angular face was suffocating. He allowed a natural, agonizing pause to stretch between them, letting the weight of his unblinking stare demand the absolute truth.

Every single guest in the drawing room stopped speaking and turned entirely toward Dominic, waiting to see if the king would side with his future bride or the housemaid.

"Juliette," Dominic said.

His deep, low voice dropped a full octave, echoing powerfully across the polished marble floors. The sound was not a shout, but the absolute gravity of his tone commanded immediate, total obedience.

"Why use my son?" Dominic asked.

The question was a lethal inquiry, a surgical strike that bypassed the accusation of theft entirely and targeted the unforgivable sin of manipulating his blood.

Juliette’s polished smile disappeared completely. The color vanished entirely from her fair skin, turning it the shade of ash. Her diamond earrings trembled as a subtle, uncontrollable shake took over her body. She stared at Dominic, the heavy diamond brooch still exposed in her hand, realizing she was entirely trapped.

Owen, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere and the disappearance of the 'happy surprise,' slid off his footstool. The little boy took Clara’s hand, his small fingers wrapping securely around her trembling ones, still proud of the surprise, but seeking comfort.

Dominic shifted his stance. He stepped deliberately between Juliette and Clara, positioning his body as an impenetrable wall of dark wool and muscle to shield the housemaid, keeping Owen safely beside him.

He looked down at Juliette. His sharply defined jaw tightened slightly, the muscles ticking beneath his neat stubble. He held a cold, unwavering stare, letting the absolute, suffocating silence of the room execute her entirely. The sequence ended in profound, terrifying silence.
