Chapter 2

The ambient noise of the grand drawing room—the clinking of crystal, the low hum of dangerous men discussing millions of dollars, the soft holiday music playing in the background—felt suffocating to Clara. She navigated the space around the low ribbon-covered worktable, her flat shoes making absolutely no sound against the marble floor. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Every time her gaze accidentally brushed past Juliette Shaw, a fresh wave of cold terror washed over her.

For weeks, Juliette had been systematically bullying Clara, her jealousy over the housemaid's undeniable bond with young Owen morphing into a cruel, psychological game. Juliette had assigned impossible tasks, criticized every movement, and whispered vicious threats when Dominic was out of earshot. But tonight, the atmosphere felt different. The tension was sharper, more immediate.

"Clara, ensure the corners on that box are perfectly crisp," hissed Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, walking past the worktable. "Miss Shaw is watching. She will have you thrown out into the snow if it isn't perfect."

"I... I am trying, Mrs. Gable," Clara whispered, her voice cracking.

"You have to survive tonight, child," the older woman pleaded, giving her a gentle, sympathetic look. "Just wrap the gifts and keep your head down."

Clara took a shuddering breath, focusing entirely on the task at hand to keep her hands from visibly shaking. She picked up a large, emerald-colored ribbon and began to tie a complex bow around a beautifully wrapped box.

Owen, sitting on a plush footstool near the table, watched Clara work. The six-year-old boy adored the gentle housemaid, viewing her as the only source of genuine warmth in the cold, massive estate. He affectionately called her "Mommy," a habit that infuriated Juliette to no end. He called Juliette "Auntie," a title that clearly defined the boundaries of his affection.

Earlier that evening, Juliette had cornered Owen in the hallway. With a sweet, conspiratorial smile, she had handed him her heavy diamond brooch. She told the boy it was a secret Christmas present for Clara, and that he had to hide it in her apron pocket without her noticing so it would be a magical surprise later. Owen, eager to make Clara happy, had successfully slipped the heavy jewelry into the deep pocket of the white apron while hugging her.

"Are you almost done, Mommy?" Owen asked, swinging his legs in his charcoal suit.

"Almost, sweetie," Clara replied, forcing a small, tired smile as her fingers manipulated the ribbon.

Suddenly, the scent of expensive perfume washed over the table. Juliette Shaw glided into the immediate, bright circle of the worktable, completely bypassing the capos and politicians.

Clara froze, her hands hovering above the ribbon. She didn't dare look up.

Juliette didn't speak. She moved with vicious, calculated speed. She reached out with her manicured hand and plunged her fingers directly into the deep pocket of Clara's rumpled white apron.

Clara gasped, stumbling backward slightly as the invasive movement startled her.

With a triumphant, theatrical flourish, Juliette drew the heavy diamond brooch out of the apron pocket. She held the glittering piece of jewelry up high, allowing the warm light of the crystal chandeliers to catch every facet of the diamonds.

Juliette looked directly at Clara, her polished public smile twisting into an ugly, cruel sneer.

"Caught stealing," Juliette announced, her voice pitching just loud enough to cut through the ambient noise of the immediate area. "On Christmas, too."

The sheer cruelty of the accusation made several nearby guests pause. Silas halted his champagne glass halfway to his mouth. The senator's wife gasped softly, turning her head. The implication was horrific—a trusted maid caught stealing from the future matriarch in the middle of a festive gathering.
