Chapter 7

The camera angle shifted to a tight close-up of Eleanor.

The seventy-three-year-old matriarch, still standing in her damp cardigan and stained work apron, finally lifted her head. The bright, cinematic lighting illuminated the deep lines of sorrow and terror etched into her fair, rosy face. She had been terribly confused and frightened, her fragile mind struggling to comprehend the cruel manipulation she had been subjected to by the woman who was supposed to become her daughter-in-law.

But feeling the heavy, reassuring presence of her son standing as a physical shield between her and the monster across the table gave Eleanor a sudden, desperate surge of courage.

Eleanor looked directly at Bastian.

Tears gathered rapidly along Eleanor’s lower eyelids, shining in the golden candlelight. Her chest heaved beneath the modest floral dress as she drew a shaky breath. She was terrified that Bastian would believe Colette's lies, that he would be disgusted by her appearance, and that he would send her away to the facility Colette had threatened her with.

Instead of reaching her arms out toward Bastian, Eleanor clutched the fabric of her damp, dirty work apron with both hands, curling her trembling fingers into the rough cotton. She felt entirely unworthy of touching his pristine, tailored dark suit.

She spoke softly, her voice fragile, uncertain, and filled with a heartbreaking, desperate hope.

“Can I hug you now?”

The question struck the dining hall with catastrophic force. The absolute, pure innocence of the plea shattered the hardened exteriors of the men and women seated at the tables. It was the devastating consequence of Colette's psychological warfare, laid bare in the bright, golden light of the crystal chandeliers. Eleanor genuinely believed she had not yet earned the right to embrace her own child.

The collective silence of the wealthy, powerful guests transformed into a suffocating vacuum. The level of calculated, psychopathic ambition required to break a mother's spirit so thoroughly sickened the syndicate.

The camera shifted to a close-up of Bastian.

The cold, terrifying edge of the Mafia boss fractured completely.

Without a word, without a single question, Bastian stepped forward. He entirely disregarded the dirty, soapy water soaking into his expensive suit jacket. He wrapped his powerful, broad shoulders around his mother's frail frame, gently drawing Eleanor into a deep, fierce, and fiercely protective embrace.

Eleanor let out a small, jagged sob, burying her face into his chest, her damp hands clutching the fabric of his vest.

As Bastian held his weeping mother, his movements slowed. Over Eleanor’s trembling shoulder, he slowly raised his eyes.

His gaze cut across the gold-rimmed porcelain and crystal stemware, locking directly onto Colette. A slight, predatory turn of his head followed, elevating his posture to its maximum, terrifying height even while holding his mother.

His jaw firmed almost imperceptibly, the muscles flexing visibly beneath his extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His mouth became completely still, settling into a hard, unforgiving line. The brief flash of paternal warmth vanished entirely from his expression, replaced by the dark, empty void of an executioner.

He held Bastian’s cold, unwavering stare on Colette.

Silence. The visual standoff suspended the dining hall in a state of impending doom. Every single guest remained perfectly attentive, paralyzed by the public unmasking of the future bride. The end of the prompt sequence left the room trapped in this suffocating vacuum of terror.
